Sffudenf spotlight Recent staff retirees listed for Hampton School Division Leslie Stiff, daughter of Drs. Le-roy and Minnie Stiff of Hampton, has been named a Virginia Scholar for 1987. Sponsored by the Virginia State Council of Higher Education. Only 45 students were selected from the State of Virginia to receive the award of $3,000 towards attendance at a college within the state. Leslie is a member of the 1987 graduating class at Hampton Roads Academy.

For four consecutive years she has been the state champion for independent schools in the 200-meter run; she also holds the independent school record for this event. Leslie is president of the HRA Keyette Club. Leslie was chosen for commendation in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for outstanding black students. Carey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William P. Carey of Newport News, is attending a political science seminar and Jenny Sinchick, daughter of Richard and Rebecca Sin-chick of Hampton, is attending a biology seminar at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, this week. Lynne Bennett's essay "What the Constitution of the United States Means to Me" has been selected as first place winner among those submitted by Peninsula seventh-graders.

A student at Lindsay Middle School, Lynne's essay will go to regional competition. Her first place win includes a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. The contest is sponsored by the Fleet Reserve Association, Peninsula Branch 172 in the Grafton section of York County. One hundred and nine Virginia high school graduates of 1987 have won Robert C.

Byrd Honors Scholarships of $1,500 each to help finance their first year in college. The national scholarships are being awarded for the first time this year. Recipients are graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. Receiving scholarships are: Ashley M. Chappell of Williamsburg, Lafayette High School; DeAnn C.

Fairfield of Grafton, Tabb High School; James P. Humes of Hampton, Hampton High School; Jennifer W. Mathews of Newport News, Denbigh High School; Rochelle E. Richardson of Newport News, Denbigh High School; and Cynthia G. Filer of Newport News, Menchville High School.

Cadet Sgt. Keith Alan Duda, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo L. Duda Jr.

of Hampton, has graduated from Randolph Macon Academy, Front Royal. He made the dean's list in the 1986-87 school year and was on the presidential list for the last nine weeks. He was named a U.S. National Award winner in mathematics. The Old Point Comfort Exchange Club has recognized six outstanding students at Phoebus High School.

Named youth of the month were: Mar-got Lee, December; Beth Bunch, January; Cheryl Fahrenkrug, Lisa Bowman, March; Elizabeth Sadler, April; and Lisa Sherrill, May. Nine John B. Cary School students are recipients of the Presidential Academic Fitness Award. Recipients received a special letter from President Ronald Reagan. They are: Anthony Herana, Eboni Bell, Jason Seas, Kristin Outten, Shelbert McClees, Jac-quetta Cook, Justin Summerfield and Kevin Summers Jr.

NASA Langley Research Center recently hosted a program for New Horizons Technical Center at the Activity Center. The theme of the activity "Building the Future" emphasized New Horizons' partnerships with NASA and other industry in the Peninsula area. About 200 parents, students, educators and employers attended the event The mentorship program of the Governor's School for Science and Technology operated by New Horizons was featured. Joi Phelps, the chemistry instructor at the school, presented students, Elizabeth Rousey of Hampton High School and Jean Stephens of York High School, with an outstanding mentorship award. Dr.

Mark Lucken-bach, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, was recognizied with an award for the outstanding mentor in 1986-87. New Horizons plans to expand the mentorship program for some students in the vocational classes. NASA hosted a three-day workshop in late June for five of New Horizon's vocational instructors who will work with the NASA mentorship program in school year 1987-88.
