PAGE 12 IN BOSTON White Negro children stayed away from their own: classrooms today and invaded predominantly white The Negroes sat down at empty desks at four white schools and were allowed to remain, at least for today whi ch marked the open ing of public schools after the summer vacation. The Negro children originally were assigned to three elementary schools which their parents claimed were overcrowded. About 400 children showed up at a civil rights headquarters on the opening day of public schools: for transportation in donated buses, cars, and station wagons to white schools. The children, under the guidance of parents and Negro leaders, were protesting alleged over- Negro racial imbalance and crowding in schools in sections of Boston. About 40 children were bused to iiie school.

Stopped in the vestibule by the principal, the children and parents brushed by him and teachers and sat down at empty desks. "We're here to stay," said the Virgil Wood, a Negro minister who drove the bus. George O'Connell, principal of the Parkman School in Boston's Jamaica Plain section, advised the Rev. Wood that the children needed transfer, slips to enroll at the school; "Take that- up, with the school department," the 'Rev. Mr.

Wood said. While O'Connell and the Rev. Mr. Wood talked, the children and. parents walked along the corridors, peered into classrooms and took places at empty desks.

A few remained in the corridors. At least five busloads of 40 to 50 children each arrived at white schools despite the appeal of. Mayor John F. Collins that the children report to schools assigned to them. Besides Parkman, the Negro children also were transported to the Stuart Gilbert, Edmund P.

Tileston and Henry Grew schools. The called "Operation Exodus," was hastily organized last night after the school committee refused to authorize busing of children from one school to another.
