PAIE EIGHT--SECTION TWO J'HE I THE LATE MR. ESTES AND AUTHOR ESTES The Life Of A Minister Is Rewarding 'WE WERE AN UNUSUAL FAMILP Dentonite's Book Describes Life In Presbyterian Manse By DIANE JOHNSTON' Retord-Chronlcle Special Writer Nannie Morris Estes, a known and beloved resident ol Denlon, has recently written a book describing her years as the wife of a Presbyterian minister Charles William Estes. The book, "Manners of Manse," was published this a by the Nayior Publishing Co. of San Antonio. In her book, Mrs.

Estes describes all of the good and bad things that can happen lo a minister's family. Now living with her daughter, Lillian Esles, at 315 Bryan, Mrs Esles wrote the book principally because she wished to "set everything down on paper" for the benefit of her children. Her husband who died in 1948 had made so many frieiids in Den ton and in northern and eastern Texas that she believed a record of his life would prove interesting to many persons. She says JOO copies of the book have already been sold, and she is now starling on the second 100. 'So many people said that we were such an unusual family, doing so many unusual things, that I decided to make a story out of it," Rotarians Name Committee Chiefs For Club Year Names of standing committee chairman for the club year of 19590 were announced this week by the Denlon Rotary Club.

Estes began the book while vacationing in Canada in December 1949, and completed it the following February. "I wrote for about 30 minutes each evening before going to bed. I put everything down in longhand, and my daughter T.ola Mae typed it for me," she recalls. DENTON CHURCH The Estes family lived in Denton from 1930 to 1937, where the Rev. Mr.

Estes was minister of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. In 1935, he went to Eastlond to take over the ministry of the Presbyterian church there, while the rest of the family stayed in Denton. The six Estes children adended NTSC and TWU. AH six are graduates.

"All of my children have been very successful in their lives, and of course I'm awfully proud ol all of them," says their mother. Charles Jr. is principal of Whitesboro high school, while a daughter Mrs. J. McCulIough, teaches in Conroe where her husband is also a school principal.

Anna now Mrs. Ed Hart, and Ruth, now Airs. Tom Mitchell, are homemakers in Eleclra and Baton Rouge, respectively. Mae, the youngest, lives in Canada as the wife of Theodore Rosza, a seismographer. Lilian, with Estes lives, is a nurse at -low Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Estes has nine grandchildren, four of whom have finished high school Asked what she believed fo be prerequisites for being a good minister, Mrs. Esles replied "He should be above all unselfish, and should really enjoy being a good Christian. He must be willing to minister to all kinds of people, and should be willing at all times to help others, no matter what She continued by saying that a minister's wife should always be ready to help her husband, to ad- lust to new situations and to up- bold his ideas. "Of course, my home arid family always came first with me, but I was always ready to my husband." REWARDING She believes that a life devoted to the church and the ministry is rewarding in its many long riendships.

"It is very satisfying see olher people accomplish -heir goals and to become estab- ishcd in Ihe world," she says. The main disadvantage of being part of a paslor's family, she feels. is the constant moving which th' family usually must do. "It oftei upset the children's school wor when we had to pick up and mov in the middle of a school year Some of the children did work i three different high schools, bu nevertheless they all managed make the honor roll." "Another Ihing is the tact tha one must leave, one's family, as had to leave mine. The congrega tion actually becomes the minis fer's 'family'," she believes.

Mrs Esles has two brothers and tw sisters of her own, who are seal tered through the country in 111: nois, California and Indiana. Sh sees them about every three years "But one learns to cope i everything eventually. It is definite ly worth all the adjusting and cop ing int he end."
