Daily Press, Wednesday, May 22, 1985 Drug Drug-intercepting Air Force unit OK'd in Senate WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate voted Tuesday to approve creation of a new Air Force unit of 16 planes equipped with sophisticated radar to try to intercept -smuggling boats and airplanes before they reach U.S. shores. "This is a giant step foward. It means we are finally getting serious about going to war against drugs," said Sen. Dennis DeConcini, chief author of the measure.

Sen. Pete Wilson, said "the magnitude of the challenge is incomprehensible" and argued that the United States "is engaged in a war, a war against drug abuse." DeConcini's proposal was approved without dissent as an amendment to the bill authorizing fiscal 1986 Pentagon spending. A similar proposal is contained in the House version of the defense bill, although that measure has not been approved by the House. Earlier Tuesday, Rep. Charles Bennett, introduced a bill that would go a step further and permit the Navy and Air Force to intercept drug smugglers.

It will be up to the Air Force to pick the types of planes and where they will be based, although at least two will probably be stationed at U.S. bases in Panama, DeConcini said. He said, "There is nothing in here which permits the military to make arrests," and he noted that while they will be flown by Air Force reserve officers, the information will be passed along to the U.S.
