Dow Jones Industrials Off .8 NEW YORK (AP)--The stock market continued an irregular performance this afternoon. Trading was fairly active. While losses outnumbered gains, the margin to the plus side dwindled from early morning.

Meanwhile, weakness in blue chips dragged at the popular averages. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks at noon was off .1 at 323.5, with industrials off .8, rails up .5 and utilities unchanged. It was a similar performance to Tuesday's, when gains far outnumbered losses but many key stocks were weak. A drop of about 4 points in Du Pont was a continued reaction to its seven-point spurt of Monday when it responded bullishly to higher earnings. The list was brightened by a rally in steels.

A jump of more more than 38 per cent in Republic Steel's first-quarter earnings oved the like period a year ago was encouraging to the entire group. The other major steelmakers report later, and investors believed Republic's report a harbinger of future news. Republic and Jones Laughlin advanced more than a point each while Bethlehem and U.S. Steel advanced about a point each.
