To all of you ridiculous grudge-holders who' are still boycotting baseball: I hope your stubbornness did not deprive your children of witnessing Mark McGwire's historic home run. I can't believe that Mark McGwire hits more than 61 home runs, and all we can do is find bad things to say about the poor man. He's one of the best things to happen to baseball since the strike, and we should all be very lucky that we saw one of the best players in baseball history play. Wow, FSU! Way to beat up on that perennial pigskin powerhouse, N.C.

By Mark Didtler SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL TAMPA The championship banners were few, but that doesn't diminish the memories. Houlihan's Stadium closed out its 31-year run Sunday when the Tampa Bay Mutiny beat the New Jersey MetroStars, 2-1. ARIZONA REPUBUC SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. If Keith plans to stick it to the Phoenix Coyotes by refusing to report to training camp, the Coyotes plan to stick it to him and his wallet.

That's exactly what they did i Saturday to the holdout left wing, announcing that they have suspended Tkachuk and that he im-mediately will begin losing a portion of his $2.8 million salary this season every day he continues to out. After one day, it already has jtost him $10,181 his average daily salary based on the 275 days the NHL season, including training camp and the preseason. General Manager Bobby Smith aid rules in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement allow teams to forfeit a day's pay from any player with a contract who refuses to report to his team. He notified Tkachuk's agent, Bob Murray, of the team's decision by fax Saturday afternoon. Neither Murray nor the team's captain and leading scorer each of the past three seasons, could be reached for comment.

Tkachuk, 26, has two years left on his contract, but he is demand-! ing a multiyear extension that would pay him at least $8 million annually and make him one of the NHL's highest-paid players. Although the suspension fig-; ures to be a significant financial i hit for Tkachuk, Smith wasn't pre- pared to speculate whether it could convince Tkachuk to I abruptly end his holdout, which officially enters Day 2 today, when i veterans skate for the first time in Scottsdale. "I don't know," Smith said. "I just know we're doing what the rules say we do. We play by the 1 rules, and this is one of them." If Tkachuk sits out the entire I preseason and then decides to re-; port for the season opener Oct.
