Smith, the runner-up for NL rookie of the year to Cubs teammate Jerome Walton in 1989, is spending this season with the Mexico City Tigers. Tampa Bay, which has a working agreement with Mexico City, has the option of bringing back Smith to its major-league camp next year. Mexico City is the same song but a new verse for Smith. "You're not going to keep Dwight Smith out of baseball because he has to go to Mexico City to play," Smith said. "I've never let foolish pride get in the way of something I want to achieve.

"I've got a track record with eight consecutive years in the big leagues, a world championship ring behind me with Atlanta in 1995 and a pretty good attitude. "I think I'm OK" ents as a baseball player. Instead, Smith, who was released by the Atlanta Braves after eight years in the major leagues, is wearing the minor-league jersey of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. "I don't know what's going on," Smith said. "I'm pretty confused by it.

If we had gotten any calls, I probably would have tried to stay in the big leagues this year and then come to the Devil Rays next year. Nobody gave me a call. I sat home as long as I possibly thought I could sit without going crazy, knowing I could still play. "I finally had to decide, and I ended up signing with the Devil Rays. Hopefully it'll give me an opportunity to come back and show my skills." Smith, a career .275 left-handed hitter, concedes he was hurt by the slight.

In the weeks leading up to spring training, Smith did not watch ESPN or read the newspapers. He did not want to hear about the comebacks of Cory Snyder, Andy Van Slyke or Howard Johnson. "I'm not sitting here griping about those teams not signing me," Smith said. "That's their business. The Devil Rays did sign me.

I'm going to go out and give them the best that I can and hopefully come back and shove it up a bunch of their tails and show them that, hey, Dwight Smith can play. I'm going to do what I can do best, and that's play baseball and keep my mouth shut." Smith has played 813 major-league games, which is more than Tampa Bay's other 90 or so players combined. But Smith fit right in during his short stint with the young Devil Rays at Huggins-Stengel Complex. During his first day, Smith hit a Ruthian shot over the palm tree behind the right-field wall at Huggins-Stengel. Some people measured it at 475 feet.

Chicago White Sox at Sarasota, 7:05 p.m. because of a back problem. But that apparently was minor, because it no longer bothers him. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said the only thing Leiter missed was his first start, which would have lasted only two innings anyway. "He's thrown as many pitches as anybody," Rothschild said.

Leiter is scheduled to make his debut April 2 against the Chicago Cubs. Having reached double figures in victories only once before, Leiter went 16-12 with a career-best 2.93 ERA last season. He also pitched a no-hitter and set a club record with 200 strikeouts. "I hear some of the things people are saying, whether ni be able to have another year like that," he said. "I don't care what people think.

I know how good I feeL" victory against Detroit included five assists, highlighted by Coleman's chopper. He moved off the mound toward home, fielded the ball, spun and fired in time to catch the all-time No. 5 base stealer. Yes, the defense was nice. Gold Glove? Well Maddux has been the National League's only winner in the 1990s.

As for significance, however, what counted most was what Leiter did with his left arm. He was making only his second start in a spring game and had pitched just five innings. One of his earlier appearances was rained out, and he ended up working in a simulated game. His last outing six innings was in a minor-league game. "Whether it counts or not, I was still putting in the effort," Leiter said.

He also was slowed at the start of camp LAKELAND He had just pitched five succinct and steady innings, giving up three hits and one run. He had just doubled his spring workload and proved himself strong and sharp enough for the regular season to begin. And Florida Marlins left-hander Al Leiter wanted to talk about defense. His defense. "Forget Greg Maddux, I'm going after that Gold Glove," Leiter said.

"Did you see that one on Vince Coleman, Mr. Speedy? I pirouetted and everything. Actually, I thought I was going to air-mail it into the outfield." Leiter's performance Sunday in a 5-2 SENTINEL RLE If" Gem of a year. Florida left-hander Al Leiter went 16-12 in '96 with a 2.93 ERA and threw the franchise's 1st no-hitter. 1 1 OLIVER NEEDS SURGERY ON THUMB CINCINNATI CATCHER Joe Oliver of Orlando will need surgery to repair a torn Hgarnent In his left thumb and wB miss 44 weeks.
