She received her B.A. Degree from Grinnell College in Art and Art History. She later received an M.A. Degree from the University of Iowa in Art History and Painting. Mrs.Herzel had a life-long interest in fine arts andpainting.

She worked as an art teacher at the University of Iowa schools in the 1940 and later taught art in the public school systems inChampaign and River Forest, IL. She also worked as a journalist at the University of Illinois in Urbana. While Mrs. Herzel worked in these positions, her husband Leo finished his undergraduate, graduate and law school studies and joined the law firm known today as Mayer, Brown, Rowe Maw. He later served as co-chairman of the firm.

Eileen Herzel is survived by her husband of more than sixty years, Leo; her daughter, Sarah of Skokie; and her son, David of Albuquerque, NM.
