The firm, North American Minerals sets a deadline of midnight on March 21 for a consumer to take up its offer. "Each stone is a genuine emerald accompanied by our certificate of authenticity to that effect," according to the letter.

The firm says it buys the "emeralds" in bulk and is attempting to market directly to the public and eliminate middlemen.
