MirTTTRiFMM Veteran Terry Labonte took the lead from rookie Tony Stewart with five laps to go and held on to win the all-star event. By Juliet Macur Of THE SENTINEL STAFF HARD TO TELL WHAT'S i a THE TRUCK OR THE LEASE? considering how the event unfolded.

By lap 11 of the 70-lap race, one-third of the field already was on its way home after getting caught up in accidents. Some of the big names were included on that list, too. In the first accident of the evening, Dale Jarrett, Jeff Burton and Ricky Rudd tangled with each other. Then on the restart, a messy 10-car accident ensued on the backstretch, caused when leader Bobby Labonte had trouble getting up to speed and collected cars behind him. Also, Ernie Irvan was trying to pass Labonte on the high-side of the track when he lost control of his car and spun out, causing cars to scatter and crash behind hiin.

He claimed his car slipped in some oil left behind by the race's earlier accident. "Welcome to the Charlotte demolition derby," said Burton, one of the 21 drivers in the race but one of 13 drivers who wrecked. "If this keeps going on all the people at home can bring their own cars, enter them and be the only ones left." Terry Labonte escaped that mayhem, then ended up in the lead after the first six cars in the field were flip-flopped as part of the rules of the race. Stewart escaped it, too, which added to his luck after an awful morning in Indianapolis. Stewart qualified a disappointing 24th for the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the day, then jetted to Charlotte, N.C, to race in The Winston Open.

He dominated that race, which was the qualifying race for The Winston, by leading 49 of 50 laps. It may have been good preparation for the real thing, when he was running side-by-side with Labonte in the main event. "I got real lucky on the back-stretch and got a big run," said Stewart, who apologized to Labonte for his aggressive driving after the race. "When Terry was on the outside of me, I know he was mad at me because he flipped me off going down the back-stretch, but I just went there and pushed. I was just racing him hard, and he wasn't giving into me.

It's unbelievable. I'm really happy with how the night went." Results, C-18 CONCORD, N.C. Terry Labonte wasn't about to let a rookie beat him Saturday, especially on the big night of The Winston all-star event in front of about 120,000 screaming fans. So, Labonte, a two-time Winston Cup champion, set out after Tony Stewart in the final laps of the non-points race, hoping to end Stewart's whirlwind night at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Stewart won The Winston Open earlier in the evening, which qualified him for the main event.

But Labonte never expected to be successful in his efforts, shaking his head in disbelief while his crew celebrated in Victory Lane. "We weren't really great in practice today. We were scratching our heads. So, we just kind of guessed at it," said Labonte after his second win in The Winston. "This is a surprise.

We never expected it, especially after all the guys that fell out today. This is cool." It didn't hurt that Labonte took four tires instead of just two during the pit stop before the final 10-lap sprint. Jeff Gordon and Stewart, the drivers who exited pit road 1-2 after the stop, took only two tires. Those four tires helped Labonte chase down the leaders, then helped him pass Stewart with five laps to go to steal the win and the $207,500 paycheck. "We've won this thing on four tires before, and this time we got beat by somebody who took four," said Gordon, who finished third.

"I knew I was in trouble when Tony Stewart got by me and my car just didn't stick. There at the end we just got beat. That's why this is The Winston. Any time you throw a 10-lap segment in there at the end, it's anybody's game." Saturday night's race proved why The Winston is billed as one of the most bizarre and breathtaking NASCAR races of the year, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes Vortec engine Air conditioning Compact disc player Tilt steering wheel with Cruise Control Alloy wheels 3rd door Vortec engine Air conditioning Compact disc player Tilt steering wheel with Cruise Control Alloy wheels wmmifi uiwi Him mm- Stewart shines in qualifying race Tony Stewart was cranky when he arrived at Lowe's Motor Speedway for Saturday night's Winston Open, the qualifying race for The Winston all-star event. But his' mood, brought on by a disappointing 24th-place qualifying attempt for the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the day, changed quickly.

Stewart won The Winston Open to transfer to The Winston later Saturday night. And he did it in dominating fashion, leading 49 of 50 laps in his No. 20 Pontiac. It was his second win in two days, coming after Friday's victory in the 25-lap qualifying race for the Winston Open. Not bad for someone who has been jetting back and forth between Charlotte, N.C, and Indianapolis, as part of his attempt to run both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 next Sunday.

"Two nights in a row and two wins in a row," said Stewart, who flew back to Indy late Saturday night. "It's been a busy day." MOTOR MOUTH LOOKS AS if someone might be in for a-good scolding, if Jimmy Spencer gets his way. Spencer thought he could have won The Winston Open but blamed a weak motor for his second-place finish meaning he did not transfer into the evening's main event. "I'm not going to roll over and play dead, because my guys have done everything they can. But I don't think our motor department has," Spencer said.

"I may get in hot water for it his comments but I don't care. Every time we go to a big race they tell me we got a good motor, but I didn't have one this time." MAKE IT 3 NASCAR WINSTON Cup owner Felix Sabates is giving a third team one more shot. As expected, Sabates announced he will field a third Winston Cup team, beginning with next Sunday's Coca-Cola 600. Jeff Green, who drove Sabates' now-defunct No. 46 Chevrolet team last year, will drive the No.
