Pitcher leads several league categories DAWSON from O-t Dolphins give Buckley contract extension Comerback Terrell Buckley, who led Miami with six interceptions last season, signed a two-year contract extension, the Dolphins said Tuesday.

Buckley, a 5-toot-9, 180-pound former Florida State star, started all 16 games at left comer-back. Mis six interceptions tied for third in the AFC and were fourth in the NFL Buckley had 164 return yards on the interceptions, also a team high. 3 draft picks agree to terms with Bucs The Tampa Bay Bucs reached contract agreements with three draft picks. Comerback Al Harris, receiver Nigea Carter and defensive tackle Anthony DeGrate have agreed to three-year contract offers and will become the first draft picks signed by the team. Harris and Carter were sixth-round selections, while DeGrate followed in the seventh round.

MORE NFL Charles Haley, 33, the only player in the NFL to win five Super Bowl rings, said he will retire before the start of trie Dallas Cowboys' season because of back injuries. Orlando's Council now a former Gator University of Florida defensive lineman Keith Council has made his transfer official. The former Evans High star will play his senior season at Hampton (Va.) University, a Division l-AA program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The 6-foot-5, 273-pound Council was listed as a backup to starters Ed Chester and Reggie McGrew heading into the 1997 season, but decided to leave the Gators Wahoos clinch spot in playoffs SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL The NFL Players Association has recommended that the Pro Bowl remain in Hawaii, but that has not deterred Orlando in its quest for the postseason all-star game. An NFL spokesman said the non-binding vote does not hurt Orlando's efforts, and the city remains cautiously optimistic that it can wean the Pro Bowl from Honolulu.

"We think that they would have a great time in Orlando," said Chuck Rohe, the executive director of Florida Citrus Sports. "That's what we will try to convince the NFL and the players that they could have a great family time in Orlando." At the NFLPA's annual meeting on Maui in March, 74 player representatives unanimously passed a resolution urging owners to keep the Pro Bowl in Hawaii They also suggested that Aloha Stadium be converted from turf to grass. "The general sentiment is that if the Pro Bowl isn't here in Hawaii, the players just won't come," Gene Upshaw, the NFLPA's executive director, told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. "Why do you think we hold the players' association meetings here?" A pair of Pro Bowlers, Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis and Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Carnell Lake, expressed support for Orlando during a visit to Walt Disney World in March. "That Orlando would be cool for me," said Davis, who went to his first Pro Bowl this year.

"I don't particularly like flying to Hawaii. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the Pro Bowl, but I've been to Hawaii three times." NFL spokesman Leslie Hammond said Orlando remains in the hunt for the Pro Bowl, which has been played in Honolulu since 1980. A league source said the players' recommendation will have no bearing on owners when they vote at their fall meetings in October. Orlando can meet the players' preference for a grass field, and it likely will present a better bid than Hawaii. There has been speculation that the league will try to rotate the game between Orlando and Honolulu beginning in 1999.

3 Mutiny players are named East reserves Tampa Bay Mutiny forward Giuseppe Galderisi, midfielder Steve Ralston and defender Frank Yallop were named reserves for Major League Soccer's East-em Conference All-Star team. Valderrama was voted a starter for the second consecutive year. Rangers reward coach with multiyear deal Colin Campbell got a multiyear contract extension as coach of the New York Rangers, a reward for guiding the team to the Eastern Conference Finals after a sub-par regular season. MORE NHL The New York Islanders became the first NHL team to dip into the free-agent market when they signed three players, including Florida forward Mike Hough.

Milbury also signed San Jose Sharks goaltender Wade Flaherty and Dallas Stars left wing Jim Storm. WNBA's attendance tops 10,000 per game The WNBA averaged crowds of 10,369 for its first 16 games, the league said. The high point was the largest attendance ever for a women's pro game a crowd of 17,780 on Sunday for the New York Liberty's home opener at Madison Square Garden against the Phoenix Mercury. "We are off to an outstanding start with early crowd levels well beyond our original expectations," WNBA President Val Ackerman said. sport like I did," Roma Dawson, said. "If she stays that's great, but it's not life or death if she loses one." Pondering the future Sarah Dawson has one more" semester of college and, after that, she hopes to find a job in; business. She is still uncertain' about her future in softball. But she is certain that making it to the Olympics in 2000 is not-one of her main goals. "The only Olympic dream I've; ever had was to be an Olympic gymnast," Dawson said.

Her mother thought softball1 was probably a better choice. She said the only time Sarah broke a bone was when she fell off the' uneven bars in gym class and broke an arm. "If the opportunity to go to the: Olympics came up, I guess I' would consider it," Dawson said. "If it happens, it happens." Currently, professional players are not eligible to play in the Olympics, which is one reason some Olympians shied away from the league. That could change for 2000.

The one competition that is guaranteed to be there in 2000 is the competition Dawson gets when she goes home to visit. "At home, it will always be the same. We all love competition," Dawson said. "If it's not softball, then it will be something like who can get to the top of the stairs first." is perfect. Sarah "Awesome" Dawson is the undefeated pitcher for the Orlando Wahoos Women's Professional Fastpitch softball team.

She leads the league in several categories. She is 16-0 with a 0.42 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 115 innings. "There's a reason we call her Wahoos coach Lu Harris said. "She's one of the top five pitchers in the country. She dominates every time she goes out there to pitch." Opposites attract In the belly of Alfond Stadium near Rollins College, where the Wahoos play their home games, Dawson lounged in a reclining chair outside the locker room after practice.

She traded her cleats for a pair of flip-flops that revealed her painted reddish toenails and her relaxed personality. Sarah Dawson is a quick-to-smile, 22-year-old out of Northeast Louisiana University. Sarah Dawson also is the ultimate hardcore competitor. "She shows no emotion during a game, whether it'd be positive or negative," said Carla Newsom, the assistant coach for Dawson's college team. "She deals with the pressure by staying calm, and that's why she's a great pitcher." Dawson played the same way in college, where she struck out 1,280 batters in her career and threw 31 shutouts her senior year, which both rank second in the NCAA.

Dawson's 0.52 ERA her senior year ranks third in the NCAA. Despite those accomplishments, Dawson still has regrets. She always wanted her team to win the All-Southland Conference title. That's why Harris became one of Dawson's rivals. Harris coached at Nicholls State University the team that won the conference title three times dur- tion.

The victory gives the Jackals a league-oest io-z record, ine loss was the first at home for the Rollers (4-4). PBA recovers from gutter ball, fillTMRl signs new TV deal with CBS ing Dawson's college career. So when Dawson heard Harris was going to coach the Wahoos, she wasn't exactly overjoyed. "When my mom told me that coach Harris was going to coach me, I groaned," Dawson said. "I knew how Nicholls played, and I didn't know if I wanted to deal with that." Calm style of play and quiet demeanor wasn't what the Nicholls players were all about.

They were emotional, boisterous and animated the exact opposite of Dawson. After years of playing with an even temperment, Dawson said she doubts one season with Harris will change her. "I always try to stay in control," Dawson said, "otherwise it's just a lot of wasted energy." In mother's footsteps Her mother feels the same way.
