enior Knights go out winners Bowling Groan VS. lCF vrrrir Stuart Stipe caught a scoring pass, and the linebackers ended 1996 with faMF w-A t. i t.is aT-: University of Central Florida coach Gene McDowell did not need to work up an animosity toward Bowling Green to get his job done. However, he said after the game that he had just cause to ruin the Falcons' final game of the season. "Don't forget that we were supposed to play Bowling Green next year, but they got out of the commitment to play Ohio State," McDowell said, smiling.

"And that put us in a position to end up playing Nebraska next year. Thanks a lot, Bowling Green." The Knights began what feci WW 1 1 ZjJ more than 100 tackles each. By Scott Kauftman OF THE SENTINEL STAFF Sophomore quarterback Daunte Culpepper might have highlighted Central Florida's 27-19 victory against Bowling Green on Saturday, but TJCFs seven starting seniors also put their stamp on the season finale. You can begin with the team's two senior offensive linemen center Alex Galvez and tackle Kevin Stewart who helped protect Culpepper long enough for him to throw for three touchdowns and 306 yards. Senior Stuart Stipe, a part-time receiver, was the recipient of one of those scores early in the third quarter, giving the Knights their first lead of the game at 14-13.

On the team's opening possession of the half, Stipe capped a 6-play, 66-yard drive when he made a 12-yard grab in the corner of the left end zone. It was Stipe's second career touchdown reception, and his first of the season. "I can thank Daunte for giving me a pass I didn't have a choice but to catch," said Stipe, who had a contingency of 21 family members, relatives and friends watching the first time anyone from his family had seen him score in a UCF uniform. "It was either catch it or wear it And he put it right there. "A couple weeks ago, they threw me the exact same pass, the exact same play, the exact same end zone, and I dropped it I've been wanting that all year.

It's a dream come true that they could all be here. It was a great way to end a career." On the other side of the ball, UCF's three senior linebackers John Bryant, NaMa Reddick and Kendrick Thomas and senior lineman Tarveres Tate also ended their careers on a successful note. Bryant and Reddick led the defensive effort with eight tackles apiece, and Bryant added a pass deflection on a 2-point conversion attempt Thomas added six tackles, giving the Knights three linebackers with 100-plus tackles for the sea- RESULTS Date Opponent Aug. 29 UCF 39, William Mary 33 Sept 7 South Carolina 33, UCF 14 Sept 14 New Mexico 17, UCF 7 Sept 21 Ball Slate 31, UCF 10 McDowell plans on becoming a tradition. They elected senior captains who will be listed as captains for the season and not just the final game.

For 1996, they are center Alex Galvez, tight end Donald Huzzle, linebacker John Bryant and linebacker Nakla Reddlck. fl Two former Knights, running back Marquette Smith and offensive tackle Ray Forsythe, were on the sideline. Both are rehabilitating serious injuries with plans on returning to the NFL. Smith had a staph infection after knee surgery but said he is "feeling fine" now and planning on rejoining the Carolina Panthers next year. Forsythe, recovering from a back injury, said he plans to play in the World League this summer before going back to the Cincinnati Bengals.

After leaving the game with an ankle injury early in the first quarter, Tate returned in the second half and provided several big hits as UCF limited the Falcons to 116 total yards. Bowling Green had 241 in the first half. "I wasn't going to sit out my last game," Tate said.

'Tm glad to go out a winner. I wasn't going to go out my college career with a loss. I also wanted to go out and be remembered for having a good game. And I think I did." son, and Tate contributed five tackles, including one sack. UCF coach Gene McDowell was particularly impressed with the 100-plus tackles each of his senior linebackers made this season, a UCF record.

"I thought the three linebackers were the best three I've ever been on a team with," McDowell said. "I don't know how many football teams ever had that Their heart, their intellect, their leadership quality. All in all, they were the best Tarveres was a real solid plyer for us. He also had a 63-yard punt, his longest of the year and the third-longest of his career.

0 Mike Huff led the Knights in rushing Saturday with 38 yards, meaning UCF did not have a player run for 100 yards in a game this season. The last time that happened was in 1982, when the Knights were 0-10. Freshman Ed Mack came closest this year with 83 yards against Illinois State. A Baltimore Ravens scout was in town this weekend and talked to UCF's three senior linebackers. Said John Bryant, who finished the season with a team-high 119 tackles: "I know I can play on that level.

All I need is the chance. Being a small school, we don't get that much publicity and everything. But the scouts, the ones that came In and watched the film, they seemed interested in UCF's linebackers." All week, the Knights had talked about having to stop Falcons tailback Courtney Davis and he ran for 19 yards on the opening play. Two plays later, he ran for 30. Finally, Davis truly embarrassed the Knights by catching a pass with nobody near him in the flat and skipping in for an 18-yard touchdown.

Davis rushed for 55 yards in five carries on that opening drive but was held to 37 yards on 1 1 more runs for a total of 92. Minutiae: Senior UCF wide receiver Stuart Stipe caught his first touchdown pass of the season, a 12-yard throw from Daunte Culpepper in the third quarter. It was the second scoring catch of his career. Junior free safety Kenton Rickerson made his second interception of the season and the fourth of his career. Tarveres Tate, Jermaine Benoit and Jameil McWhorter had one sack each.

Tate had six sacks this season, ending his career with 18. finishing seventh on the school's list. Benoit led the team this year with eight, which ties him for seventh on the all-time, single-season list. 1 JERRY GREENE AND SCOTT KAUFFMAN Liberty Adult Vidso XXX VIDEOS, RENTALS 8 SALES Adult Gift Shop With Full Line Of Gifts. The Knights adjusted to shut down Bowling Green's running game, however, and allowed 116 total yards and a touchdown on a "1-yard drive" in the second half. "I wasn't disappointed with the season at all," defensive end Jermaine Benoit said. "We kept getting better, and there's a lot to say for that" Ask Bowling Green.

"We played pretty lousy," Falcons coach Gary Blackney said. "The biggest concern is that we started out 4-2 and finished 4-7. 1 have a hard time finding anything positive in that" UCF, on the other side, was 2-6 three weeks ago. "We could have had a winning season, and it's bad that we didn't" UCF coach Gene McDowell said. "But other than that I'm proud of the way our players responded to adversity." On their final Saturday of the season, with winds gusting at more than 20 mph, the Knights had to respond to adversity quickly.

Bowling Green took the opening kickoff and moved 80 yards in eight plays to score. The Knights immediately responded with their own eight-play scoring drive. Nonsant caught three passes from Culpepper for 61 yards, including a perfect scoring strike of 32 yards. Bowling Green struck again 30 seconds before halftime on a 23-yard pass by starting quarterback Bob Neimet However, he aggravated a shoulder injury and could not return in the second half. The turning point was the third quarter, when the clubs had a three-touchdown exchange that put UCF ahead for good.

Culpepper's 12-yard pass to Stuart Stipe and an extra-point kick by Charlie Pierce gave UCF a 14-13 lead with 11:40 remaining in the period. When UCF got the ball back, however, the wind and a big roll resulted in a 73-yard punt by the Falcons to UCFs 1. On the next play, Culpepper had a pass intercepted that set up a 1-yard scoring dive for the Falcons and a 19-14 lead. No problem. On the next series, Culpepper and Nonsant connected for a 54-yard pass to Bowling Green's 8.

Three plays later, Mike Huff scored on a 1-yard pitchout for a 20-19 UCF lead. The outcome was not ensured until midway through the final period. The Falcons ran a fourth-and-6 play on UCFs 36 that failed because of a fierce pass rush by Benoit The Knights took control of the ball and the game. Seven plays later, Culpepper threw deep to the rear of the end zone, and Nonsant was there for a final scoring catch in 1996. jdej $9.95 Video Free! I (ol equal value) BACK SI POPULAR DEMAND.
