Arkansas at Little Rock, 7 p.m. -0 yards and caught a 35-yard scoring pass from Freddie Kitchens, all in the third quarter, to help the Crimson Tide pull away after the teams were tied, 7-7, at halftime. The loss spoiled Kentucky coach Bill Curry's first return to Tuscaloosa since he left Alabama in 1989 to coach the Wildcats. As it has all year, Kentucky struggled on offense, finishing with just 124 yards and being held to a touchdown or less for the fourth consecutive game, i Riddle, a junior, finished with 49 yards on 17 carries. He started in place of Curtis Alexander, who sat out with a broken wrist he sustained two weeks ago.

LSU 35, VANDERBILT 0 LOUISIANA STATE, fueled by two touchdowns apiece by running backs Kevin Faulk and Rondell Mealey, kept a seven-game winning streak intact with a rout of visiting Vanderbilt. No. 14 LSU (4-0, 2-0) has won seven in a row dating to 1995, the longest winning streak for the Tigers since 1973. Vanderbilt (0-4, 0-3) outraged LSU fans by being the only opponent to refuse to let the Tigers play at home in their traditional white jerseys. The Commodores wore white.

LSU played in gold jerseys, the first time the Tigers had worn them since 1960. The Tigers dominated Vanderbilt, not allowing the Commodores past the LSU 40-yard line until the closing seconds of the third quarter. GEORGIA 33, MISSISSIPPI STATE 19 MIKE BOBO threw two of his career-high three touchdowns in Georgia's first five snaps as the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1) won at Mississippi State (2-2, 1-1). After Mississippi State drove 86 yards on 17 plays on the opening possession, Georgia needed just five plays to score twice and take the lead for good. Mississippi State, playing without conference rushing leader Keffer McGee, failed to start 2-0 in the SEC for the first time since 1986.

The Tigers, at home but with coach Terry Bowden in the press box, barely beat the lightly regarded Gamecocks. ASSOCIATED PRESS AUBURN, Ala. It wasn't supposed to be this hard. No. 20 Auburn had to huff and puff Saturday just to keep up with South Carolina in a game some had predicted as an easy victory.

The Gamecocks (2-3, 1-2) put the Tigers through a tough drill before relenting with just 28 seconds left in the game, giving Auburn (4-1, 2-1) a 28-24 victory. "If our football team continues to fight like that, we are going to win some games," South Carolina coach Brad Scott said. "It was an extremely tough environment. We played well in it." The Gamecocks ranked last among SEC teams in rushing defense held the Tigers to just 71 yards on the ground. But they didn't stop there.

Auburn managed just 157 yards of offense on 10 first downs and was just 3-of-10 on third-down conversions. Offensively, the Gamecocks moved the ball well on several drives, including a seven-play, 44-yard TD drive that gave them a 21-14 third-quarter lead. Quarterback Anthony Wright supervised an effective option offense that racked up 387 yards against an Auburn defense that was averaging 268.5 yards allowed going into the game. He made few mistakes until he fumbled at his 19 with 4:57 left, setting up the winning touchdown for Auburn. "I feel like we dominated the game," said South Carolina tailback Duce Staley, who rushed for 99 yards the first time in four games this season he's failed to break 100.

on first-and-goal from the 5. Some of the trouble may have been due to the fact that coach Terry Bowden, who had successful neck surgery earlier in the week, worked from the press box. While Bowden said he was able to get the job done, he said not being able to shake a little sense into his players was frustrating. "I couldn't grab a player and communicate with them," he said. The same couldn't be said for Temple coach Ron Dick-erson. Quarterback Matt Lytle, benched after a 72-0 loss to Ohio State two weeks before, led a three-touchdown Pitt comeback in the final 10V4 minutes as the Panthers (2-4, 1-2) shocked Temple, 53-52, Saturday in a game that left both coaches in tears. Dickerson, whose unsuccessful fourth-down gamble with 2:44 remaining may have cost Temple (1-4, 0-1) the game, announced his resignation after the game. "I told the team in the locker room that I am resigning at the end of the season," Dickerson said. "I lost this game today, not them.

I wouldn't blame the university if they fired me tonight. This team deserves better and they deserve a smarter coach than me." Dickerson, a former Penn State assistant in his fifth season at one of Division I-A's least-successful schools, apparently was crying just before he announced his decision. "Just when you think you've seen it all in college football, you haven't," said Pitt coach Johnny Majors, who cried at the sight of his relieved players celebrating only their second victory in 16 games. Lytle threw scoring passes of 14 and 4 yards to Mark Butler ahead of Billy West's decisive 6-yard scoring run with 58 seconds left after Temple had opened a seemingly safe 52-33 lead with 10:13 Virginia 0 7 0 0-7 Georgia Tech 10 I 0 013 FW downs Huahos yards Pasera CompM-Irt Return Yards -Punta-Avg. Williams scored on a 3-yard run and set up a field goal with a 50-yard dash as Georgia Tech upset No. 12 Virginia, 13-7, Saturday, snapping the Cavaliers' five-game winning streak. "I think today we found out we can play at the next level," Georgia Tech coach George O'Leary said. "Now we just need to do that every week." Tech (4-1, 4-1) built a 13-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and went on to snap a four-game losing streak in the series. Virginia (4-1, 2-1) cut the lead to 13-7 on Tiki Barber's 1-yard TD run in the second quarter and appeared to be driving for a go-ahead score in the final quarter before Nathan Perryman picked off Aaron Brooks' pass after the Cavaliers had moved to Tech's 28.

The Cavs had one more chance, starting on their 41 with 1:44 to go. Brooks scrambled for 32 yards to Tech's 27, then completed a second-down pass to the 18 before Virginia stalled. Ralph Hughes batted down Brooks' third-down pass and the fourth-down toss was incomplete, allowing Tech to run out the clock. 1 "We had too many penalties on offense," Virginia coach George Welsh said. "We didn't block them very well.

We couldn't get our running game going."
