Joe Muller, president of the newly formed West Sunrise Homeowners Association, said his group would like to see blocked all plans to build interchanges to the proposed expressway since the access roads would pass through their single-family home neighborhood, in the far northwestern section of the city. After the meeting with county engineer Les Spencer, Muller reported, "The idea they gave us was it's a tough thing to move. They held out a little bit of hope." Muller said he realizes the residents may not be able to prevent Oakland Park Boulevard and Flamingo Road from being turned into major access roads to the proposed expressway.

But the group is hoping "we can get a commitment from (the county) to work with us," Muller said. While the access roads cannot be prevented, Muller said county officials said they would investigate the feasibility of relocating the Oakland Park interchange a bit to the north "so it wouldn't be as close as (plans call for) Plans now call for the access road to run as close as 150 feet of the homes on Northwest 30th Place, Muller said. About 220 acres of undeveloped land owned by Development Corporation of America would be donated to the county for development of access roads, according to an agreement that would give DCA, in exchange for, that land, extra density to allow more units to be developed on about 600 acres of nearby DCA land. The agreement was entered into about two years ago between DCA, Sunrise, and the county. But when DCA went before the county Planning Council last month requesting approval of the zoning change, the residents poured into county chambers and succeeded in temporarily blocking its approval while DCA, city and county officials attempt to reach a compromise with the residents.

The meeting with county representatives is only one of a series of meetings the residents plan to have, and Muller said representatives from his association plan to meet with Mayor John Lomelo next week.
