"It was a great feeling," said Brinson, who finished the game with three catches for 31 yards. "I really didn't think about it until the half. That's when I got nervous." Not having Grant and Cleveland did little to stem a UCF offense that finished 44 yards shy of breaking the school single-game passing mark of 471 yards.

knew corning into the game that everyone had to step up with those two gone," Hall said. The absence of Grant, the Knights' leading rusher with 339 yards and two touchdowns, also gave Edward Mack a chance to prove himself. The freshman paced the Knights with 83 yards rushing on 13 attempts and a touchdown. Culpepper's early exit gave backup quarterback Jason Thorpe some playing time. The sophomore, who replaced Culpepper in last week's 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech, completed 7-of-12 attempts for 95 yards and a touchdown.

said after the Knights' 42-15 rout of the Redbirds. "Whatever the problem is, I'm sure he and coach will solve it" It was probably much easier for Culpepper to handle the loss of his favorite target considering the numbers the sophomore put up without him. Culpepper, who left the game late in the second quarter after reinjuring a slightly separated left shoulder, completed 19 of 28 attempts for 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Actually, Culpepper might consider Cleveland's loss a bittersweet blessing and a bonanza for the rest of the receivers. Seven different UCF players caught at least one pass, including a pair who had more than 100 yards receiving.

Sophomore Mark Nonsant had six catches for 111 yards, and junior Rufus Hall added 103 yards on six receptions. Both also had receiving touchdowns. But no one was happier with the chance to play than redshirt sophomore Patrick Brinson. Just two plays into the Knights' second drive, the Miami native caught his first career pass a With Todd Cleveland and Mike Grant suspended, other receivers and running backs got to shine. By Rex Hoggard OF THE SENTINEL STAFF The University of Central Florida players knew corning into Saturday's game against Illinois State that they were in a must-win situation.

What complicated the issue was the news the Knights would play without receiver Todd Cleveland and tailback Mike Grant, who had been suspended prior to me game for violating team rules. Cleveland, a junior, had been a staple for the pass-oriented UCF offense all season, leading the team with 59 receptions for 745 and six touchdowns. "It was difficult not having Todd Cleveland out there," UCF quarterback Daunte Culpepper Rules are rules. Believing that, UCF coach Gene McDowell said Saturday that he really had no choice when he suspended two key offensive starters, receiver Todd Cleveland and tailback Mike Grant, for the final three games of the season. Both were suspended from the team before UCF's 42-15 victory against Illinois State for an undisclosed violation of team policy.

McDowell's worry was how widespread the punishment would be. "To lose this game would have been disastrous," he said. "I had to risk punishing myself and the entire team by taking away the abilities of those two players. I hope they know I really care about' them, and I hope they will be back next spring." Cleveland led the Knights with 59 catches and was sixth in the nation. A junior, he missed his sophomore season because of academic failures.

Grant, a sophomore, was UCF's leading rusher with 339 yards. About 80 potential recruits at- r-J tended the game. McDowell called i -r Jf Culpepper aggravates shoulder UCF from C-1 ') M- I tnem oy far the best bunch we ve ever had here." The group included four highly touted quarterbacks from around the state: George Godfey from Tampa Jesuit, Rob Harding from Kissimmee Gateway, Corey Hess from St. Petersburg Northside Christian and Blake Thames from Palm Beach Forest Hills. Other outstanding players spotted were running backdefensive back Marcus Floyd from Bartow and defensive lineman Gerod Warren and safety Adrien Weeks from Union County.

The play of the day for UCF quarterback Daunte Culpepper, was not any of his completed passes. His favorite was a 28-yard run on a reverse by receiver Rufus. Hall. Culpepper made the lead block that allowed the long gain. RESULTS, SCHEDULE Date Opponent Aug.

The Red-birds (2-7) stayed in a soft man-to-man pass defense that could not cope with UCF's 43-pass attack. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper played just one half, not playing after halftime for the second consecutive week because of a slight shoulder separation. He made excellent use of his time, however, completing 19 of 28 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns. "It was one of Daunte's best days yet," McDowell said.

The Knights led, 29-8, at half-time, so backup Jason Thorpe stepped in at quarterback. He Said Culpepper: "If I could have used my injured shoulder, I would have lifted him off the ground." Central Florida kicker Charlie Pierce was happy with the Knights' 42-15 victory against Illinois State, but the senior probably will remember the game for a more personal reason. With 8:22 remaining in the second period, Pierce's 23-yard field goal broke the school's career scoring mark, surpassing Franco Grilla's record of 285 points set in 1992. But it was more than just a broken record. When Pierce was a freshman, Grilla served as a mentor for the Lakeland native.

"He really helped me when I first got here," said Pierce, who has 289 career points. "It meant a lot to me to accomplish this." Minutiae: UCF recorded its first safety since 1987. Five of UCF's seven scoring drives took less than two minutes. The Knights had four running plays between 17 and 30 yards and six passes between 17 and 59 yards. After ending their first possession on a lost fumble, the Knights scored on their next five drives.

Sophomore receiver Patrick Brinson had the first three catches of his career for 31 yards. With players suspended and injured, others stepped up. "Sometimes the coaches need a little push to give you a chance," Brinson said.

"Today was an opportunity for me and others to get the job done." Meanwhile, freshman Edward Mack came on in place of Grant and ran for 83 yards on 13 carries, scoring once. Ten Knights totaled 170 yards rushing for a 597-yard team offensive total, easily the high this season. UCPs defense wasn't proud of allowing two long scoring drives, but it generally played well. Linebacker Nakia Reddick had an exceptional afternoon with 11 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. And here is good news for the Knights; They recovered three fumbles by Illinois State and only had two turnovers of their own one fumble and one intercepted pass from Thorpe although they did fumble six times.

UCF entered the game leading the nation in turnovers with 31. This time, the game began with a takeaway for UCF. On the Redbirds' first play, a hit by Ja-meil McWhorter caused a fumble that Jermaine Benoit recovered. In the third period, UCF held an uneasy lead, 29-15. Culpepper had even put his shoulder pads back on just in case.
