C-12 The Orlando Sentinel, Sunday, October 20, 1996 mm Hi NE Louisiana knocks air out of UCF tioriiwasi LA. vs. UCF Raymond Philyaw passed for 479 yards, the most ever allowed by the 1 Knights, and three touchdowns. By Peter Thomson OF THE SENTINEL STAFF After recovering the onside kick, Philyaw converted a fourth-and-10 on a 37-yard fade pass to Booker, who beat UCF cornerback Reggie Doster on a perfectly thrown ball at the UCF goal line. "We call that our scramble drill," Philyaw said.

"We just wanted NLU receiver Derrick Bridges to get away from the corner. My job is to put it in the corner into the end zone." Booker (10 receptions, 218 yards) and Bridges (5-144) combined for 362 of Northeast Louisiana's receiving yards. Their distinct size advantage against cornerbacks Doster (5 feet 9, 175) and Davin Bush (5-8, 160) was a mismatch that the Knights couldn't overcome. "That last touchdown came down to the skill level of their receivers vs. our corners," McDowell said.

"Our guys made some great plays against their receivers, but their guys made one more big play than we did." 18 seconds helped Philyaw establish a passing yardage record by a UCF opponent. Philyaw's last-minute heroics may have also, at least temporarily, buried the collective soul of a UCF team that appeared to have put the Indians away. "I figured he (Philyaw probably would Texploit UCF's secondary," coach Gene McDowell said. "That's been our history. i The teams with the big receivers exploit us that way." Northeast Louisiana managed just 64 rushing yards, but it hardly mattered.

"After looking at film, we saw we could get up on top on their corners," said Philyaw, whose career high was a 486-yard performance against Nevada last season. "We wanted to attack their corners, and we did a good job of coming back in the second half." A 15-yard scoring strike from Philyaw to Marty Booker with 2:23 left in the fourth quarter pulled the Indians to 38-33. Maybe there will come a time when Central Florida's young secondary can look back at Saturday's aerial assault by Northeast Louisiana as a rite of passage. For now, the only passing appears to be from opposing offenses. Never has the Knights' pass defense been as exploited as it was in a 39-38 loss Saturday.

Engineering the onslaught at the Florida Citrus Bowl was Indians quarterback Raymond Philyaw, who completed 25 of 42 passes for 479 yards and three touchdowns. Two scoring tosses in the final 2 minutes, 'rx. r7 Lost in the pain of the 39-38 loss to Northeast Louisiana on Saturday was the three-sack effort by Central Florida junior defensive end Jer-rnalne Benoit. That tied Benoit for third on UCF's all-time list. The record is five.

Benoit had two sacks on one series in the fourth quarter that forced Northeast Louisiana to settle for a field goal, leaving the ahead, 31-27. "When I maae those sacks and we didn't give up a tying touchdown, I thought we had it," Benoit said. "But things happen." They'ye happened too often to the Knights. "We still give up the big plays, and it really hurts," he said. Besides everything else, the Knights lost two key players for the Season fullback Kendrick Moore (fractured kneecap) and deep Scott Kalralla (dislocated wrist).

Oddly, Chris Wrenn replaced both, playing full time at fullback and filling in as the snapper, too. Sprained ankles put tailback Mike Huff and center Bill Dayton out, although neither injury is considered serious. The first mixup of the day happened before the game. Dr. Trevor Colbourn, former UCF president who began the football program, was asked to midfield to receive a ball autographed by the current team.

The ball was missing, so Colbourn settled for a handshake. The game was the first the Knights have played host to as a Division 4-A program against a Division I team. UCF played host to East Carolina in 1991, but the Knights were a l-AA member then. UCF Is often referred to as a small school. The reality is, that reference must refer to its national reputation as a football team.

UCF's en-s rollment of 28,000 students is larger than any opponent the Knights face this season. Todd Cleveland's 66-yard punt return, to Northeast Louisiana's 1-yard line in the second quarter not only set up UCF's first touchdown but should improve the Knights' national ranking in that category. UCF came into the game ranked No. 111 with a minus 1.8-yard average on punt returns. Cleveland had fielded just one punt, for minus 1 yard, before Saturday.

Cleveland also had a 68-yard return for a touchdown nullified by a clipping penalty. Northeast Louisiana cornerback Travis Singleton, a redshirt freshman from Cocoa High, thwarted two UCF drives with interceptions. Sin-' gleton last played at the Citrus Bowl as a high school junior against Jones. Senior offensive guard Shawn Jenkins, a three-year starter for the Indians, played in the 1992 Florida-Georgia High School All-Star Game at the Citrus Bowl after starring at Starke Bradford. Jenkins was an all-star teammate of UCF center Alex Gal vez.

Minutiae: The combined point total of 77 points was the most since UCF's 1994 homecoming game against Troy 'State. The Knights, dropped that game by the same 39-38 score. "I mean, over and over, all the time." It seemed as if every Knight had plays to think about, many good, but many more not so good. Handling it and getting over it would be the next challenge. "Our guys have a lot of pride, and they're really good people," McDowell said. "We'll be back." KNIGHTS from C-1 has got to accept the responsibility, and my turnovers were one of the reasons we came up short." The other way of looking at it was to heap unlimited praise on I the other quarterback, Raymond Philyaw. He passed for 479 yards, the most ever against Central Florida.

i Philyaw, only 5 feet 11, completed 25 of 42 passes, including three for touchdowns and one that was intercepted. Ten of his passes ranged from 24 to 66 yards. Split end Marty Booker had 10 catches for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Flanker Derrick Bridges had five catches for 144 yards. Northeast Louisiana (4-3) was the first Division I-A team that UCF faced at home in its initial season at the I-A level.

Commemorative tickets were handed out at the game to mark the occasion. And an ill-timed, postgame pep rally was planned for Church Street Station. UCF had beaten Northeast Louisiana in each of the last two seasons on the road. The Knights wanted to celebrate their first I-A victory of this ina-gural season. Philyaw, the losing quarterback in those previous games, said the Indians had a score to settle.

"This is like payback," he said. For the Knights it was, like, painful. "Turnovers are the story," McDowell said. "We didn't give ourselves a chance to win." Actually, the Knights had many chances to win, leading by 14 in the third period. Todd Cleveland, the Knights' big-play maker, gave the Knights some chances.

He scored on two pass receptions and set up another score with a 66-yard punt return to the Indians' 1. However, it was the punt return that didn't hold up that sticks in his mind. Cleveland's 18-yard touchdown catch early in the third period put the Knights ahead, 24-10, and had the fans smelling a rout. After NLU ran three plays, the Indians punted to Cleveland, and he raced 68 yards to the end zone. It was a waste of time, causing a premature celebration in the stands.

A holding penalty reduced his 68-yard touchdown to an ordinary 14-yard return. Instead of leading by 21, the Knights ran a few plays, then gave up another touchdown and were in a fight that they would lose at the end. "If I get that, we win," Cleveland said. "I think that took a little something out of us." Fast-forward to the final minutes. The Indians scored to trail, 39-33, with 2:18 left.

They chose to try an onside kick.
