123456 SECTION4CHICAGO TRIBUNE 9 OBITUARIES WILLIAM EWART BAWN, 80 William Ewart Bawn, 80, a retired electrician who shared his love and knowledge of computers with other seniors, died Thursday, Nov. 27, after collapsing in his Palatine home. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Mr. Bawn spent part of his youth in Chicago and Wisconsin before his family returned to Canada. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in England as an airplane electrician during World War II.

After the war, he came to Chicago to marry his wife, Lois, whom he had met through his uncle. He joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and went to work for Automatic Electric in Northbrook. In 1967, he took a job with Central Telephone in Des Plaines, staying there until his retirement at age 65. Anything electronic held a fascination for Mr. Bawn, said his daughter, Mary Susan Sieczkowski.

bought a kit from Heathkit and built his own simple computer when they first came out. He used to teach electricity to his friends. And he was always fixing his daughter said. He also would search every page of every catalog he received to find unusual items to send to his children and grandchildren. would get all excited when he found little his daughter said.

The classes were held in the Palatine Public Library. Other survivors include his wife of 57 years; a son, William Ewart six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Theresa Catholic Church, 467 N. Benton Palatine. PEGGY McCARTHY, 43 Peggy McCarthy, 43, of Oak Forest, a mother of four who volunteered and worked at her high school, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, of complications from lung cancer. Born in Chicago, Mrs.

McCarthy was raised in Oak Lawn and graduated from Oak Lawn High School. While working as a corporate auditor for 7-Eleven convenience stores, she met Patrick McCarthy, a supervisor at one of the stores. Other survivors include three sons, P.J., Matthew and Andrew; a daughter, Meghan; her mother, Sue Marcanio; a sister, Luann Wilson; and a brother, James Marcanio.

8, 1914, to the Reverend Dr. Jesse Halsey and Helen Isham Halsey. She graduated from the College Preparatory School in Cincinnati and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western College for Women (Miami University), Oxford, Ohio, in 1936. In 1941, she earned a Master of Arts Degree in General Studies from Yale University, and in 1978, a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of Iowa. In 1942, she married Dr.

Joseph Haroutunian, a distinguished theologian, author, and professor who taught at Wellesley College, McCormick Theological the University of Chicago. The couple lived in Chicago until Dr.Haroutunian death on Nov. 15, 1968. Mrs. Haroutunian was anartist, writer and teacher.

Her works of art in oil, watercolor, pastel, charcoal and collage covered subject matter ranging from urban scenes to rural landscapes. She showed her work at the Art Institute of Chicago and theMilbridge Historical Society. In 1998, Mrs. Haroutunian and her son, artist Joseph Haroutunian, had a joint retrospective show at the University of Maine-Machias that revealed influences of mother upon son and vice versa. Her published works include Incident on the Bark Columbia: Being Letters Received and Sent by Captain McCorkle and the Crew of his Whaler, 1860-1862 (Cummington, Massachusetts: The Cummington Press), 1941, a true story conveyed through letters which she compiledand edited, and Joseph Cornell in View, Arts Magazine, 1983.

She taught both visual andlan- guage arts at the Cummington School, Cummington, MA (summers was a teacher of English at the Francis W. Parker School in Chicago (1958-61). Above all, Mrs. Haroutunian was a loving and devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-aunt and friend. Her paintings, writings and teaching, indeed all her endeavors, were characterized by remarkablecare and attention to detail.

She was anexemplary cook and gardener, and a committedmember of her church. Her sweetness, style, intelligence and command of the English language inspired all who knew her. Edwin career in professional public relations began with the Chicago firm of Daniel J. Edelman Associates. Following that he worked in politics as the Campaign Managerof Tyler Thompson for Congress, Democrat, Illinois in 1960.

In the 1960 he was active in the civil rights movement, participating in voter registration work in the South, with Freedom Summer. He was active in the anti-war movements of the 1960 1970 and the present. He lived for a short while in Boston working with New Community Projects. After returning to California in 1974 he workeda sa development officer for many non-profit agencies, including St. Benedict Hospital in Ogden, UT and Holy Name College in Oakland.

In 1989, Edwin answered his true calling and pursued an advanced degree in Library Science at San Jose State University. He was a Reference Librarian in many Bay Area communities, and most recently was employed at the San Francisco Public Library, in the Music and Art Department. He also served at Chabot Community College and at his local San Leandro Public Library. Among Edwin manyinterests were nature (penguins being a particular favorite), bird watching, and travel. He and Elissa shared many happy times on bird walks in local parks and nature preserves.

Trips to Italy, Costa Rica and the south of France inrecent years offered treasured opportunities for exotic bird watching.
