As a result, some dealers saic they had lowered prices to helj clear the decks and reduce tii amount of money that pa banks in interest on unsold cars New car sales for March were reported lower than last year. March 11-20 sales across the country declined about 1 pei cent to 253,166 cars from las year's 255,877. The first 10 days of March saw a drop of about 7 per cent to 176,558 from lasi year's 189,675.

And tentative Detroit produc- tion schedules call for a report- ed total of 2.3 million cars to roll off the assembly lines in the next three months. That figure is 8 per cent below last year's but could keep the dealers loaded with their present inventories unless sales exceed the 2.2 million for pred- icted for the next three months. One dealer, said he felt manu- facturers were going overboard, Edward J. Balatti, president of Geary Ford in San Francisco, said "I'm not going to be the hero who keeps the economy going." Balalti said he now pays banks about $5,000 a month to keep his lot loaded with $1 mil- lion in unsold cars. Lest year at this time, he said, be paid banks only $3,000 a month.

Balatti said he had cut some prices to increase sales and make way for new models but last month refused 35 ne cars from the factory. High interest rates to borrow- ers--a record of 7.5 per cent to those with the best credit--has hurt profits, Balatti said. "The people who used to buy on credit have been replaced by the cash buyer, the tough buyer you don't make any money off of him," he said. Ralph Nader, an auto industry critic, claims manufacturers have overproduced and may have misjudged the market. "But mainly they just push pro- duction hard as they can.

They want to sell, sell, sell." Their hope is that spring sales, spurred by good weather, will take a big jump forward and remain strong through the summer until 1970 models come out in the fall. Kidd Brewer Has Obtained Sir Walter Hotel In Raleigh RALEIGH (AP) Kidd Brewer, Raleigh businessman who has been a candidate for several top state offices, an- nounced Friday he had acquired the Sheraton-Sir Walter Hotel in a big land exchange deal. Brewer issued a prepared statement saying he had ex- changed with Plaza Associates of Raleigh 72 acres of land for the hotel and parking deck, the Caudle and Womble buildings in downtown Raleigh and other property and considerations. The 72 acres is located at the intersection of Highway 70 and U.S.

1 west of Raleigh. "My ambition is to continue the remodeling and refurnishing program and to maintain the Sir Walter as the central hub of the various activities of North Carolina," Brewer said. He added he plans to build a high rise office complex on the land occupied by the Caudle and Womble buildings. Brewer was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 1956 and governor in 1964. Last year he ran for chief judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals and was defeated by former Su- perior Court Judge Raymond Mallard.

Mallard sentenced Brewer in an influence peddling case in 1963 when Brewer and former Highway Commissioner engineer Robert Burch received 18- month terms on conspiracy charges. The state charged that Burch wrote highway sign spe- cifications favorable to firms represented by Brewer as man- ufacturer's representative. Brew was paroled in April, 1964, after serving four months and compiling a good prison record.
