The Orlando Sentinel, Tuesday, June 6, 1995 METRO 2 on trial in death of German tourist ASSOCIATED PRESS MIAMI Simultaneous jury selections began Monday in the murder trial of two men who admitted grabbing the purse of a lost German tourist who was run over as they fled. Anthony Williams, 20, and Leroy Rogers, 25, are charged with firstdegree murder and strong-arm robbery in the death of Barbara MellerJensen, 39, a German schoolteacher who was killed as her mother and two young children looked on from a rental car. The killing, which occurred when Meller-Jensen got lost after leaving Miami International Airport on 2, 1993, was one of 10 tourist deaths in less than a year. It prompted Miami officials to post signs making it easier to guide visitors to the airport and beaches. According to court documents, Meller-Jensen stopped her rental car along an interstate after it was bumped from behind by Williams and Rogers.

The pair took her purse, and she was knocked down and her skull was crushed when the right rear tire ran over her. The defendants claim the death was accidental. But Alexander Jensen, 8, who along with his grandmother and younger sister witnessed the killing, gave prosecutors and defense attorneys a more chilling account of the killing during an interview taped last week in Germany. "He very clearly stated that my wife was knocked down by the suspects and run over while she was unconscious," said her husband, Christian Jensen, who will travel to Miami for the trial (his son will remain in Germany). Defense attorneys Herbert Smith representing Williams and Sy Gaer representing Rogers were opposed to having jury selection before separate judges.

Attorneys hope to complete jury selection by the end of the week, said court spokesman Mort Lucoff. Muir will hear the case in front of two sets of jurors, both defendants and attorneys. Toni's sister, Wendi Neuner, then 10, was left bound and gagged but escaped and got help. Two younger brothers also spending the night at their grandmother's house were unharmed. The case spawned a highly publicized, nationwide manhunt, ending with James' arrest in California after 17 days. James, who knew Dick's adult children, had rented a room from the woman for several months. Victims' relatives were pleased with the jury's recommendation that James receive the death penalty.

"He took her kindness and turned it against her. That was wrong, and I don't believe in the eyes of God he'll be forgiven for that." During closing arguments, Hastings recounted the grisly nature of the crimes. James knew what he was doing during the attacks and acted logically to get away, Hastings noted. James' expressions of remorse were self-serving, he added. "He didn't turn himself in after he realized what he had done," Hastings said.

"This defendant deserves no more mercy than that he showed his two victims." Andersen appealed to jurors to put their emotions aside in deciding a sentence. James was "ashamed of what he did and wishes he could turn it back," he said. "The circumstances show he was in a drug-crazed state," he added.
