OBITUARIES Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES — Robert Rockwell, the actor best remembered as the shy biology teacher Mr. Boynton in the popular television comedy ‘‘Our Miss Brooks,’’ has died. He was 82. Mr. Rockwell died Saturdayof cancer at his home in Malibu. A CBS television show that originated on radio, ‘‘Our Miss Brooks’’ starred Eve Arden as Constance Brooks, a wisecracking English teacher at Madison High. Philip Boynton was the potential husband Brooks was always trying to snag but could never quite get, at least not in the series. The show ran on CBS television from 1952 to 1956 and in syndication for decades after. ‘‘Our Miss Brooks’’ was the high point of Mr. Rockwell’s acting career. He was so identified with the Boynton role that he saidyears later that it initially hampered his getting more dramatic roles. Still, Mr. Rockwell, who was born in Chicago, found steady work in television in more than 350 shows over 50 years. He was a frequent guest or had recurring roles on numerous programs, including ‘‘The Loretta Young Show,’’ ‘‘Days of Our Lives,’’ ‘‘Perry Mason’’ and ‘‘Beverly Hills 90210.’’ In the late 1950s, he starred in the Western series ‘‘The Man From Blackhawk’’ as a frontier insurance investigator; the show lasted one season. He appeared opposite Jose Ferrer in the Broadway production of ‘‘Cyrano de Bergerac’’ in 1946 and opposite Ginger Rogers in ‘‘A More Perfect Union’’ in the 1960s in San Diego. Mr. Rockwell began his movie career with Republic Pictures as a contract player. He acted in more than 30 movies, including the science-fiction classic ‘‘War of the Worlds.’’ Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth; two daughters and three sons. ROBERT ROCKWELL, 82 Mr. Boynton of ‘Our Miss Brooks’ Robert Rockwell By Rudolph Bush Tribune staff reporter Helen Myers McLoraine, 84, an oil executive who devoted herself to talented young figure skaters and for many years sponsored the early careers of such greats asScott Hamilton and such up-and-coming stars as Tim Goebel, died Thursday, Jan. 23, after a fall in Dallas. To her last days, Mrs. McLo- raine was following the sport and the skaters she loved, attending the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships at Reunion Arena in Dallas. “Skating was her life. She attended all of the events all over the world,” said Bob Anderson, her friend and business assistant. A longtime Winnetka resident, Mrs. McLoraine became involved in figure skating in the late-1970s, when she and her late husband, Chicago attorney Frank J. “Mac” McLoraine, invested in the Colorado Ice Arena in Denver. In 1985, she moved to Denver to be closer to the are- na and the skaters. It was there that she learned of a young skater with extraordinary talent who was in need of a financial sponsor. Long before Scott Hamilton was a household name, Mrs. McLoraine enabled him to train and travel to competitions. Over the years, he became like a son to her, according to mutual friends. “Next to my mother, she was the greatest influence in my life,” Hamilton said the day after her death. “She was a magnificent woman who not only supported me early on in my skating, but many others in the skating community.” Mrs. McLoraine lovedbeing aroundyoung skaters, whom she found to be vibrant and interesting, Anderson said. A native of Valparaiso, Ind., Mrs. McLoraine moved to Chicago in the late-1920s. In 1939, she graduated from the University of Chicago, where she studied business. For much of her life, she was an independent oil investor with interests in U.S. wells. Her success in business allowed her to devote her time to figure skating as well as other philanthropies, including the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the University of Chicago and the House Ear Institute. Mrs. McLoraine is survived by her cousin, Thomas Harper. Services will be held Friday in Denver. HELEN MYERS McLORAINE, 84 Aided figure skaters’ careers Helen Myers McLoraine
