'The Greenhouse' being demolished for new complex If you had found yourself lost in complex with a resort hotel, the island's first 18-hole golf course, and 650 luxury condominium apartments and patio villas scheduled for completion in 1985. Already some 200 units are occupied, the golf course is in play and the resort hotel is open.

Using his successful Caribbean development package as a founda tion, it took Armour only eight years to turn his Palm Beach apart 1 1 HUt I I i West Palm Beach anytime over the past few years, more than likely directions to you would have been prefaced by the question, "Do you know where The Greenhouse is?" The Greenhouse on South Flagler Drive was a nostalgic landmark restaurant specializing in oversized tropical drinks. Its modest green and white exterior belied landmark status and the fact that secreted inside were Palm Beach Professionals and international notables tipping glasses and dining regularly. The lush, tropical atmosphere and delectable Caribbean cuisine were but the visible veneer of its popularity. The essence of success was found in the congregation of its regular patrons attornys, judges, celebrities, upper-echelon businessmenwho made The Greenhouse a reservoir for stimulating conversation and exchange of ideas. Today The Greenhouse is being demolished to make way for construction of The Plaza of The Palm Beaches a $60 million luxury condominium and commercial complexthe first Downtown Planned Development in West Palm (DPUD).

But before the gentle reader commiserates the passage of nostalgia for modernism, pause to that the developer, Robert Armour, planned it that way! The development firm constructed The Greenhouse on a parcel of land he purchased on South Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach. He had a greater vision, however. On that very spot, he saw not a restaurant, but a high rise tower replete with magnificent views of all the Palm Beaches and the finest luxury amenities available anywhere in the world. While Armour personally supervised the creation and operation of The Greenhouse restaurant, he embarked simultaneously on ambitious development projects in the Caribbean, including Mahogany Run on St. Thomas a 315-acre ment dream into reality.

However, little did he anticipate that in the same expanse of time The Greenhouse restaurant would receive overwhelming acceptance in its life and mourning as a nostalgic West Palm landmark in its demise. The Plaza construction beginning on the old Greenhouse site will feature 224 apartments in twin towers rising 32 stories over the In-tracoastal Waterway, including grand penthouses with a price tag of $1.25 million each. The base feet of commercial area, will house office space, retail 'shops and a 6,000 square foot restaurant. While a depressed real estate market lingers throughout the Nation, apartments and condominiums valued in excess of $24 million have been sold in the first tower of The Plaza. Occupancy of The Plaza is expected in the winter season of 1983-84.

Prices for apartment residences remaining in the first tower range from $285,000 to $410,000 and the remaining penthouses start at $425,000 and go upwards to $1.25 million for the grand penthouse on the 32nd floor. The residences will be characterized by luxury amenities that reflect the select group of national and international purchasers buying property here. Among the features that will be standard at The Plaza are marble and European tile floors, gourmet kitchens, travertine baths with jacuzzis, concierge, maid, linen services, direct-dial Watts lines to select cities, closed circuit movies and computer terminals in every apartment.
