DAILY PRESS. Newport News, Wednesday, March 22, 1S78 15 rsr WARWICK WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT TENNIS WIN Abrams Survives 3 Setter, Tops Notre Dame 7-2 Monarch Runners Nip Mariners 72-64 By TOM FOSTER Daily Press Sports Writer Marc Abrams says he has a right to be philosophical after just barely edging past an opponent in three sets when "you know you should have won in two." Maybe he isn't willing to debate which came first, the chicken or the egg, but he does have a tennis version of the old question he'd like to discuss. "I'm hitting the ball better, I've just got to concentrate. I finally got disgusted enough with my game. I told myself in the tiebreaker if I couldn't concentrate for nine points, I'd better just hang it up." "Marc had an excellent match for the spectators," Haynie said. "He was erratic, but when it came down to the wire, he played the last two games like a heads up senior." Penn State Names Edelman Cage Aide STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

(AP) Ray Edelman, head basketball coach at the Haverford School the last five years, has been named an assistant to new Penn State basketball Coach Dick Harter, the university said Tuesday. Edelman compiled a 95-15 record at Haverford, a private school in Philadelphia's Main Line district. game so you can play 'inside' tennis and think more about what your opponent is doing, or playing inner tennis so you can improve your game?" The Florida native had just suffered through "hot and cold" spells on the way to a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5-1) triumph over Brian Hainline at No. 1 to help William and Mary down visiting Notre Dame 7-2. It was the Indians' fifth straight dual meet victory of the season as strong and depth down the line has helped produce its strongest start in many years.

was playing without sophomore sensation David Smith, who usually holds down the No. 2 position. Smith's right elbow is giving him trouble. "He could have played," Coach Steve Haynie said, "but I didn't want to take the chance of something minor turning into something major." With Smith out, freshmen Paul Daus and Bill Fallon moved up one spot to fourth and fifth, respectively. Both won.

Daus upped his record to 4-2, Fallon 5-1. The story for as he admitted later, was all too familiar. "I just lack the killer instinct it takes," he MARC ABRAMS Rallies For Win At No. I Area Prep Tennis Results By GEORGE WATSON Daily Press Sports Writer Joey Keyes frankly admits he doesn't like to run the mile. But that doesn't mean the Ferguson High School ace doesn't excel at the event.

Outdueling Menchville's VMI-bound Ed Daniels, Keyes recorded his best time ever 4:24.6 to win the mile at wind-swept Todd Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Less than an hour later, Keyes came back to capture his specialty, the 880,. in 1 :58.7 to complete the afternoon with an excellent early-season "double." Despite Keyes' efforts, however, Menchville turned to its mile relay for the second straight week to register a 72-64 Group AAA Peninsula District duel meet victory over the Mariners. With Ricky Estes winning the long jump and triple jump besides adding a third in the 100 and running on two victorious relay teams, Warwick downed Denbigh 75-61 in another meet on the Todd Stadium card. Menchville, which edged Phoebus 69-67 last week when the mile relay team came through, was holding a slim 67-64 lead going into the last event.

But the Monarch foursome of Andre Gilliam, James Perry Anthony Callicutt and Eric Perry uncorked a 3:29.5 to seal the triumph. It was Callicutt, a senior running track for the first time, that turned in a blistering third leg to give the Monarchs a sizeable advantage. Menchville got double victories from Rodney Sutton (high jump and triple jump) and Eric Perry (high hurdles and intermediate hurdles). Sutton, a senior who had riot run track since the 10th grade, turned in an excellent leap of 45-1 in the triple jump. He also scratched on a jump of over 46 feet.

Although finishing second to Keyes in the mile with a 4:25.6, the Monarchs' Daniels recorded a fine double of his own with a 9:44.1 in the two mile. "I always thought I had it, in me physically but not mentally," Keyes said of his mile effort. "I guess I was more mentally ready than I thought." His previous best was a 4:28 last year. Evert, who returned to action last week after a layoff of four months, was in sharp form, hitting with depth and sharpness and making few errors. Her service was par-' ticularly effective.

Evert lost only three points in her first set service games and only five in the second. Evert lost her service only once, in the seventh game of the second set when she followed a double fault with a cross-court drive out. Former Lafayette star Ron Springs, better known for his running exploits on the football field for Ohio State these days, isn't a bad sprint coach, either. He turned his sprinters over to Springs (on Spring break) Monday and Tuesday and the ex-Ram speedster worked some quick magic.
