C. W. Hiatt, husband of the former Miss Marena Madden of Hays has developed a method for knocking out potentially harmful viruses from live-virus vaccines. Dr. Hiatt is a scientist with the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Hiatt made his report of the development to the Seventh International Congress of Biological Standardization in London last week. Of the method the Washington Star of August 30, said: The method may have an important application to the manufacture of oral polio vaccines because the appearance of naturally present viruses from monkey kidneys presents a major production problem. These viruses must be eliminated. Dye Used The new method, which is actually a new concept of an old technique, involves inactivating the monkey viruses more rapidly than the polio viruses.

This destroys the monkey viruses while leaving the polio viruses in a weakened what is needed for the vaccine. Dr. Hiatt discovered that some animal viruses combine with small amounts of dyes and become sensitized to ordinary light. Others, including the polio viruses, are highly resistant to this treatment. To date he has successfully inactivated five of the 40-odd simian viruses known'to be present in monkey kidney tissue cultures.

His method involves the addition of tiny amounts of the dye to; the monkey kidney tissue culture fluid. This is pumped through glass oval tubings surrounding a brilliant incandescent bulb. The light energy bombards and the sensitive viruses. Feasible Commercially Dr. Hiatt said the method has been adapted to pilot plant operation and is feasible for processing commercial volumes of the vaccine.
