28, 1969 3-B uled for release Monday. The driver returned to Char- lotte to tell Alexander the news. But Wilson couldn't be found. He reported to his job at the county garage Thursday morn- ing but remained only briefly before leaving to visit the rela tives. Thursday afternoon, hospital officials and the funeral home were desperately trying to reach him.

Telephone calls were made to points in North Caro- ina and South Carolina, but ap- parently, Wilson was on the Funeral Rites Set Saturday For Mrs. Crews ftobeson County Desegregation Searing Stopped WASHINGTON (AP) A learing on desegregation of schools in Robeson County, N.C., was recessed Thursday after the school system's superintendent refused to testify as an adverse witness. MurchisOn Biggs of Lumber- ton N. counsel for the Robe- son County School Board, in- formed Federal Examiner Irv- ng Sommer that the superin- tendent, Young H. Allen, "does not choose to testify." The attorney contended that Jerry H.

Luck, counsel for the Department of Health, and Welfare, was using shotgun tactics in suddenly call- Jig Alien as a witness for the department. Said Biggs: "We challenge ie department to produce evi- dence that we have failed to produce records or persons, in- Supt. Allen, prior to thi. bearing." The upshot was that the ex- aminer allowed 30 days for the department to present its views relative to the testimony ques- and any other allegations. The shool board is allowed time to reply.

When the hearing opened, Luck said the department seeks an order to cut off federal funds for the 30 schools administerec by the Robeson County boarc because, he said, the board fail ed to comply with desegrega tion laws and federal regula tjons. A. J. Howell, a civil rights ad visory specialist for the depart ment testified that he visited the Robeson schools in 1968. He said thp board's plan fails to elimi nate a dual school system for Negroes, Indians and whites fails to desegregate the faculty adequately, and has not resol ved the problem of transfer pupils in and out of the five citj school districts within the coun ty.

"He'll be contacted," said Dr. John Gambill, superintendent of Broughton. "That will be taken care of. what will be left unan- swered is who made the tele- phone call." Dr. Gambill said such calls are normally recorded by the lospital but there is no record of such a telephone call in the case of Mrs.

Wilson. He suspects a cruel hoaxster made the call, then called a Jharlotte newspaper to plant a phoney obituary notice. He acknowledges a Broughton doctor did take the call from the 'uneral home and did say the DOdy could be picked up any- time. "We handled the call rou- tinely," said Dr. Gambill.

"The death was supposed to have oc- curred during the day and the night duty doctor assumed the funeral home director had re- ceived accurate information." "We're as puzzled as anybody about this," he said. "But we're certain the death call did not come from Broughton." "It was a low trick," he add- ed.
