33 DAILY PRESS, Newport News, Friday. July 21, 1S78 SPORTSMAN'S WEEKEND GUIDE Take Plenty Of Bait, Large Cooler: Load Up On Spot, Croaker, Flounder i By TOMMY SEWARD Outdoor Editor "Where can I catch some fish?" was one of the most recent questions received. Right now, that's a tough question to answer because the fish seem to be everywhere! It might be easier to say where you can't catch fish like the middle of a road. The spot, croaker, trout, flounder and small bluefish are cooperating nearly throughout the lower end of the Chesapeake Bay. Drifting, anchored or standing on a pier, an-' glers are filling up their coolers with these fish.

And that's not to say those in the larger boats going offshore arent to be slighted. The dolphin, tuna and marlin as well as large bluefish are helping to fill the fish Is. ZONE 4 Southeast of Virginia Beach anglers are also finding billfish and dolphin.

The tuna here, too, can be found. Most anglers are trolling ballyhoo baits for the marlin. The dolphin will hit the ballyhoo, too, but once the dolphin appear the hooks are generally pulled in and rebaited with cut fish. When the dolphin are there, the action can be furious and last for a few minutes or a half an hour, depending on the abilities of the fishermen. Bloodworm baits are best from the piers at Kitty Hawk to Nags Head.

The spot, croaker and mullet catches are good. ZONE Charter boats out of Oregon Inlet and Oden's Dock in Hatteras are finding their customers a good variety of fish, ranging from marlin to dolphin to albacore. Flounder can be found by the surf casters at the point just below Buxton. This has been a consistent sport. Croaker, trout and cobia are abundant in the sound behind Buxton and down to the Hatteras boxes of the offshore fishermen.

A winner of a North Carolina citation was Don Fulcher of Newport News for the 433-pound yellowfin tuna he caught off Hatteras. Two Hamptonians also were North Carolina citation winners for white marlin. William H. Boster released a white marlin, while Michael S. Wolsh boated a 50-pounder.

Both were fishing out of Oregon Inlet at the time. Two very good flounder areas can be found at Wachapreague on Virginia's Eastern Shore and around Cape Point below Buxton, N.C. ZONE 1 As has been the case for over a year, the James River and Hampton Roads remains closed to fishing unless the catch is immediately returned to the water. ZONE 2 However, if you drift or anchor on the bay side of the Hampton Roads bridge-tunnel line, you may keep all the fish (legal size of course) you want. These fish, obviously, do not venture into the restricted areas and then return to the bay to be legally caught.

The bottom-feeding fish in the lower Chesapeake Bay are plentiful and it's an unusual day when anglers don't fill coolers with spot, croaker, gray trout and flounder. The two Peninsula fishing piers have enjoyed exceptional results the past few weeks. Earlier this week, at Grandview pier for instance, the early-, arriving fishermen immediately started catching spot, croaker, bluefish and flounder almost as soon as the baited hooks touched the bottom. This went on throughout the day. Most of the flounder were on the small side, but still keepers for tasty future meals.

At Grandview and the Buckroe Beach pier, the best croaker action, for the considerably larger ones, has been in the evening and after dark. Cobia and bluefish can be found at Bluefish Rocks, located northeast from the Grandview pier between the pier and the mouth of Back River. Chumming is the best means for luring the cobia and blues to this spot. Headboat skipper Al Hartz of Poquoson has shifted his fishing trip site to southwest of the York Spit light near the, Ballard oyster grounds. Win a Free Charter Boat Excursion out of Cape Hatteras! "My parties are getting all the spot, croaker, flounder and bluefish they want," Hartz reports.

Gray trout sport is very good off Cape Charles both day and night. ZONE 3 -Drifting for flounder is the main target in marsh bays at Wachapreague Inlet with tremendous numbers of flounder being taken on the charter trips daily. The reefs and wrecks along the Virginia coast are offering fair to good success for sea bass and fair yields of tautog. Trolling offshore also will produce bluefin tuna, (A fi i Are you entering the 2nd Annual is? fill mam boat Here's the sixth of seven questions: raH Just A Normal Flounder String Mrs. Pat Cardwell, Newport News, Tuesday landed this catch at the Grandview pier.

Ml I BALTIMORE (AP) -'The Baltimore Colts' linebacking corps, viewed as one of the team's strengths, was thinned out considerably Thursday with the retirements of of veterans Willie Lanier and Tom MacLeod. The retirement of Lanier, a standout in 11 years with the Kansas 'City Chiefs, had been expected. He had frequently mentioned stepping down before the trade to Baltimore last April.

But MacLeod's action apparently caught the National Football League team by surprise. "We were very surprised with Tom's decision," said Coach Ted Marchibroda. "He was a very big asset for the Colts and his retirement was unexpected.
