conflict at Memorial Stadium against visiting Buffalo is one of four involving play-off berths. New England keeps alive its faint hopes of winning the Eastern Division crown in the American Football Conference. Good Effort By Specialty Teams 'Must9 Continued From D-l reflected in the brilliant coaching records of their two leaders. ashington's George Allen is in his 11th year as a head coach and has not had a losing season while compiling a 106-42-5 (.716) record. Landry also hasn't endured a losing campaign the past 11 years but he is in his 17th season (all at Dallas) and has amassed a 127-92-6 ledger The Cowboys charge into the action following a 26-7 beating of the Eagles in Philadelphia while Washington whipped the Jets 37-16 in New York.

It was Washington's biggest output on offense and lifted Eddie Brown onto the threshold of NFL immortality. The unassuming return star can break the league record for punt return yardage today. He has 606 yards on 48 attempts and the NFC leader in the category needs only 50 more yards to erase Neal Colzie's standard of 655 yards which he set with Oakland last year. Another category in which the cagy Allen most likely will capitalize on is the return to old stomping grounds by former Cowboys Calvin Hill and Jean Fuggett. "I know they'd love to knock us off," says Fugett.

Deluxe Cowboy quarterback Roger Staubach points out "They've said a few things about me. I know I'll play hard." The Last assertion may have been all the oddsmakers needed. They have made the hosts a four-point favorite. (Western Divnon) MIAMI (AP) The Minnesota Vikings stopped Miami with a tremendous first-quarter goal-line stand, then went on to thrash the Dolphins 29-7 behind three Fran Tarkenton to Sammy hite touchdown passes to clinch the home field advantage in next weekend's playoffs. The Vikings, finishing the regular season with an 11-2-1 record and the National Football Conference's Central Division title, will host the NFC wildcard team either Washington or St.

A seven-yard touchdown pass from Tarkenton to White and a one-yard scoring run by Brent McClanahan turned the game into a rout at 29-0 in the third quarter. Miami finished with a 6 8 record, the first losing season in 14 years of coaching for Don Shula.

White finished the game with nine receptions for 120 yards as Tarkenton riddled the Dolphins with 13 completions in 23 attempts for 184 yards. He has 57 catches for 526 yards and won the title in 1974 with 72 catches and tied for the honor in '75 with 60 receptions. Carr only caught two passes in the 31-13 Baltimore whipping of the Bills in Buffalo "Lots of times, coverages dictate who we throw to," says the personable native Oklahoman and long-time resident of Louisiana.

"At first (1974 and '75) I wasn't getting the respect I deserve. Now, if we throw, fine; if not, fine, too. Basically, we take what they give." In view of last week's 24-17 loss to St. Louis, Carr was asked if that would increase the Colts' fervor against the Bills "I work so hard during the week, I can't tell how the team as a whole would react. I do know I get mad when people say how we play on the field is mental.

"How can it be mental when you fumble because somebody hits you hard. What does that mean, when they say it's 'mental'? I work myself to be ready. I have to run and catch. That's my job regardless who it comes against." He concedes in big games "maybe there's a teeny bit more adrenalin flowing. "No matter what the game, I'll be intense.

I'm a competitor. "Buffalo has had its defensive problems, but offensively, they're super. We only had the ball 19 minutes against St. Louis. This time we have to have the ball more.

If Buffalo is on its game, they can eat up eight or nine minutes in a drive. The big key is for us to keep the ball and to get results from our big-play guys." The latter obviously includes, Jones. Mitchell and Carr The Colts enter the fray with a definite problem at fullback with Rossevelt Leaks and Don McCauley both ailing. Rookie halfback Ron Lee most likely will get the call there, whic will place additional pressure on Mitchell. The television schedule today starts at 12:30 p.m.
