Mr. Authur M'Gilh Mr. Bezaleel Fifk, PORTRAIT of a BACHELOR A BACHELOR is a fort of a whimfical being, which nature never intended to create. He was. formed out of the odds and ends of what materials were left after the great work was over.

Unluckily tor him, the finer pafiions are all mixed up in ihe compofition of thofe creatures intended for focial 'What remains for the Bachelor, is hardly enough to rub round the crafty mould into which he is thrown. Some feafoninj, that he may not be quite infipid, mull be fubftitm -d in the dead of more valuable ingredients'; fo in Dame Nature tofles (Vlf-love without weight or ineafure, a kind of underllanding that ii, fit for sso other ufe a fpi iuk-ling of wifdom, which turns to acid, from the four difpotition of the veflel in which it is contained; and the whole compofition is concluded with an immoderate portion of oddities. Thus formed, thus finiflied, a Bachelor is popt into the world Mere lumber, without a poffibility of being happy himfelf, or efTentially contributing to the happintt'sof others. His only bulinefs is to keep himfelf quiet. He gets up to lie down, and lies down to get up.

No tender impreffions enliven his waking hours no agree-ble reveries difturb his dronilh (lumbers. If he ever fpeaks the language of fenfibility, he (peaks it on the excellence of fome favourite difh, or on the choice liquors with which his cellars abound. On fuch fubjedls he feels the raptures of a lover. As for the pace of a Bachelor, he would hardly mend it to get out of a dorm, though that (torm were to threaten a deluge but fliew him a woman who is entitled to the compliment of hit hat, and he will ftiufHe on, as if he was walking for a wager. Hit Houfe-keeper, or his Laundrefs.he can talk to without referve but any other of the fex, whofe con-f ditionis above an ufeful dependent, is hit tenor.
