By Mark Didtler SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL DAYTONA BEACH Last May, Daytona Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood's biggest concerns were the Texas prep playoffs and saving a couple of bucks to have a good time. All that changed the month after the Grand Prairie High School standout was taken fourth overall in the amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs.

Suddenly, the eyes of an entire organization and its fans were upon him. A franchise-record $1.2 million signing bonus answered financial concerns. What remains is the pressure of living up to lofty expectations. Wood, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound right-hander, took a step in the right direction Thursday, recording his first professional victory as Daytona downed the Kissimmee Cobras, 5-3, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Wood allowed three runs and three hits during five innings.

He struck out sue Even with the triumph, Wood's performance showed there is work to be done. He walked four and struggled with his control in a three-run third inning. "In high school, you could get away with not being as consistent around the plate," Wood said. "The hitters here are a lot more disciplined and have a lot of pop in their bat." Wood, 18, is projected to be the stopper on Chicago's north side one day. There is no doubt he has the tools to fulfill that destiny.

Even with a 98 mph fastball, Wood is not afraid to throw his curve in critical situations. Now he's working on a change-up. "He's the real thing," Daytona Cubs manager Dave Trembley said. "He's a composed young man and he knows what he wants. He has the body language to go along with the tools that he has.

He's not intimidated at all." Despite the temptation, the Cubs are committed not to rush their prized prospect through the system to Wrigley Field. And that suits Wood just fine. "It's not hard at all to be patient," Wood said. "I'm not thinking about it. I'm just FOR ONE FULL YEAR 99 As V.

Register Now- Looking at the offensive output, the O-Cubs could make a good argument that run support is the main culprit for their struggles. At Tinker Field, the O-Cubs have scored 44 runs in 18 games, an average of 2.4 runs per contest. Away from Tinker, they have scored 73 runs in 15 games, an average of 4.9.

The O-Cubs rank last in the Southern League in team batting with a .231 average. Only three regular starting players Kevin Orie Troy Hughes (.264) and Chris Petersen (.265) are hitting better than .250. SUN SPOTS TODAY, THE O-Cubs play the second of a four-game series with the Jacksonville Suns at Tinker Field. The Suns, the Class AA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, are one of the more exciting offensive clubs in the league. They lead the circuit in home runs (52), rank second in runs (167) and third in team batting average Two of the Suns Sean Freeman and Bubba.Trammell lead the league in home runs with 10.

LOCAL UPDATE A GLANCE at how some local players are doing this season in the minor leagues: Right-handed pitcher John Foran (University of Central Florida) has a record of 0-3 with a 2.47 ERA with Class A Fayetteville (Detroit) of the South Atlantic League. Foran, the Tigers' 10th pick in June's draft, has pitched much better than his record would indicate. He has allowed two or less runs in each of his last four starts. Another Central Florida product, outfielder Chad Mottola, is having a solid season with Class AAA Indianapolis (Cincinnati) of the American Association. Mottola is hitting .338.

Left-hander Larry Wimberly (West Orange) picked up his first victory of the season last week with Class A Fort Myers (Boston) of the Florida State League. He is 14. I'm taking it game by game." For a young hurler, each trip to the hill provides new lessons and challenges. It's all part of the game. "What he needs obviously is experience," Trembley said. "He needs innings in professional baseball and he just needs us to be patient with him." Once the seasoning is complete, Wood's minor-league excursion likely will end at the Windy City's most famous intersection of Clark and Addison. "He's going to be very hard to beat once he gets some experience and once he grows into his body," Trembley said.
