The Orlando Sentinel, G-AYFER Sunday, October 10, 1993 A-7 35 inducted into women's Hall of Fame DISCOVER! ASSOCIATED PRESS SENECA FALLS, N.Y. Thirty- five of the country's most prominent women, including feminist Gloria Steinem and civil rights beacon Rosa Parks, were inducted Sat SAVINGS ON MENSWEAR urday into the National Women Hall of Fame. "We've decided through the years that we have got to make sure we go down in history as a particular group who made fantastic contributions to our nation," inductee Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress, said before a standing ovation. 4 "rV Among the other inductees who I I 4 attended the ceremony: former Planned Parenthood director Faye Wattleton; Wilma Mankiller, princi pal chief of the Cherokee Nation; I 1 I'll 1 .1 11 ii and Martha Gnftiths, former con-gresswoman and lieutenant governor of Michigan. New York first lady Matilda Cuomo, who addressed the group before the ceremony, said the strengths and accomplishments of women are insufficiently recognized.

"They're leaving a legacy for our daughters, for our granddaughters and the future," she said. The 1993 class of inductees is the largest in the hall's 24-year history, said its director, Susan Butler. In the past, the inductee list has included no more than four women because the Hall required that only two living and two dead women be inducted per year. The rules were changed because board members felt they were pitting the accomplishments of women and their importance in history against each other, and that contradicts the hall's ideology, Butler said. Butler said the ceremony is meant to honor the women and showcase the influence they have had on society.
