Miss Tailback Sammy Winder, the nation's leading scorer going into the game, exploded for three touchdowns in the third quar ter Saturday to spark Southern Mississippi to a 33-12 win over Richmond. Southern Mississippi now is 8-2 on the year, and Richmond is 4-6. The teams traded a pair of field goals in the first half, which ended in a 6-6 deadlock. For Southern Mississippi. Winston Walker connected on shots of 32 and 37 yards.

Scott Schramme countered for Richmond with fielders of 40 and 43 yards. Southern's' first TD drive of the third quarter covered 39 yards on seven plays to put the Eagles up 12-6 after Walker missed the extra point. Richmond evened the count at 12 with 4.29 left in third quarter. Barry Redden got the touchdown on a one-yard run. Winder then scored twice in less than three minutes to put the Eagles ahead to stav 26-12.

By RAY HEBERT Daily Press Sports Writer The Lady Pirates of Hampton Institute opened-their basketball season Saturday night in grand fashion. Not only 'did they give Coach Mary I in Sinclair a 72-69 triumph in her debut, but they knocked off defending Division II state champion Radford. With eight seconds remaining in the game, Deryle Pridgeon assured the Lady Pirates of their victory when she controlled a jump ball at the Highlanders' foiil line. The 5-foot-7 Pridgeon, who gave away four inches to her opponent on the jump ball, tapped the ball to a teammate, then raced down court, took a pass and scored as the buzzer sounded. "I'm totally excited," said Sinclair, who didn't show any signs of nervousness throughout the contest.

"I was excited irlside. I can't lose my composure during the game," she added. Toni Goodman put the Lady Pirates ahead for good at 70-69 with a field goal with 30 seconds remaining. Coach Pat Barrett's Highlanders immediately called time out to set up their last-shot plan. Eight seconds later the Highlanders again called time out for midcourt possession and to reassure themselves of their final shot.

Gwen Jordan toui snoi put Hi ahead, but Crofford scored moments later for Radford and a 69-68 lead. Goodman then tallied for the Lady Pirates and Pridgeon came through on the jump. A78-13 From Wire Services PHILADELPHIA Reserve forwards Bobby Jones and Steve Mix combined for 37 points Saturday to lead Philadelphia to a 115-108 National Basketball Association victory over the New Jersey Nets and give the 76ers their 14th triumph in their last 15 games. Although Philadelphia never trailed and led by as many as 19 points on five occasions.

New Jersey chipped away at the lead. Bob Elliott's two free throws with 3:54 remaining in the game pulled the Nets to within 108-102, but Jones and Julius Erving combined for six consecutive straight points to ice the win. The 76ers led 55-37 with with 3:45 to go in the half on two free throws by-Mix. Mike Gminski led a Nets' rally to cut the deficit to 60-49 at halftime. BULLETS 100, HAWKS 88 ATLANTA Elvin Hayes scored 34 points to lead the Washington Bullets past the slumping Atlanta Hawks 100-88.

The loss was the 10th in a row for Atlanta and 13th in their' last 14 outings. The Bullets snapped a two-game losing streak and have now won five of their last seven games. Hayes led the Bullets' offense in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of his points when his teammates were ineffective offensively. The Hawks got within six points at 84-78 with 4:58 left, but could get no closer. KNICKS 100, CAVALIERS 95 NEW YORK Mike Glenn scored a season-high 29 points, including five in the final three minutes, to lead the New-York Knicks to a 100-95 victory over the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers.

First-period goals by Clark Gillies. Denis Potvin and Anders Kallur led the New York Islanders to a 3-1 triumph over Buffalo. Saturday night, ending the Sabres' 10-ganie undefeated National Hockey League streak. Gillies scored his seventh goal of the season, with assists from Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy, at 4:20 of the opening period. Potvin added his fourth goal of the season at 17:05, also assisted by Bossy and Trottier.

Kallur's goal came on a power plav at 19:37. MAPLE LEAFS 4, OILERS 2 TORONTO Darryl Sittler scored a goal and had an assist to become the second player in the Toronto Maple Leafs' history to exceed the 800-point mark and helped his team to a 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Dennis Maruk scored his second consecutive hat trick in sparking the Washington Capitals to an 8-4 win over the Hartford Whalers.
