D4 Daily Press, Sunday. November 7, 1982 Terps Lucky To Elude Miami For 18-17 Win Ole Miss Breezes By Wave 1 4 i 4 Is Cf7 i I 3. 1 i im 1 J. Iff 7 YV safety, he froze for a second and was swarmed under by Terps. Two plays later.

Rick Badan-jek plowed into the end zone for his first of two touchdowns. Atkinson's extra point lifted the Terps to a 7-6 lead. Then Maryland's center, Joe Wilkins, committed a boo-boo with 1:07 left in the first half. His snap sailed over the head of punter Alan Sadler and out of the end zone. That enabled the Hurricanes to pad their lead to 14-7.

The Terps squandered a scoring opportunity in the third quarter. Driving 54 yards to Miami's 6, Maryland, facing a third-and-goal, went with its bread-and-butter performer, quarterback Boomer Esiason. Esiason lofted a delicate pass to wide-open Willie Joyner at the 3. Joyner spied an opening and should have scored, but he dropped the pass. Atkinson promptly shanked a 23-yard field goal attempt.

"That was the quickest I ever forgot a miss," Atkinson said of the misfire that was partly caused by Esiason's slight bobble of the placement. Maryland's comeback began with a 31-yard TD march, Badan-jek going the final four yards with 7:10 left. The short drive was aided by a splendid punt from Sadler and the unyielding defense in red and white. Mike Lewis made a splendid catch of an Esiason pass for the two-point conversion. Ross said later.

"It was too early for a squib kick." The Hurricanes drove to the Maryland 23, but then stalled and let the clock run down before calling a timeout. Davis game-winning attempt was long enough but wide right. "This was a character win," Ross said following his team's seventh consecutive victory. "Execution-wise, we did not play well. "I think we've reached the point where we don't always have to rely on emotion.

Today we won on maturity and confidence." The Terrapins were perilously close to being humbled after vaulting to 19th in last week's Associated Press Top 20 poll. They trailed 17-7 after three quarters. They made a season's worth of mistakes; dropped passes, 12 penalties for 98 yards, two turnovers, a bad snap from center that resulted in a safety, and confusion on the sidelines that resulted in the Terps being unable to save their three second-half timeouts for the end. With freshman quarterback Kyle Vanderwende showing a lot of poise, Miami marched 72 yards in nine plays on the game's first possession before settling for a 25-yard field goal from Davis. Vanderwende was playing in the place of Mark Richt, suspended earlier in the week for disciplinary reasons.

"I'm particularly proud of Kyle," said Miami Coach Howard Schnelienberger. "I thought he handled himself well for his first outing." It was a curious first half, one in which the punt-unit centers of both teams were cast in the spotlight with dubious efforts. Maryland's first touchdown was set up when Louis Jaramillo snapped the ball over the head of punter Greg LaBelle. LaBelle picked up the ball at his 1 and, instead of running out of the end zone and taking a Maryland's Rodney Caldwell Duke Bombs Deacons ap Pnoto (69) too late trying to stop pass. Castor's 34-yard touchdown reception from Bennett with 10:59 left clinched Duke's fifth victory in nine starts and squared the Blue Devils' league record at 2-2.

Wake Forest fell to 0-5 in league play. John Tolish, who finished with four field goals, snapped a 26-26 deadlock with a 40-yard field goal with 9:03 in the third period and made it 32-26 with a 33-yarder with 1:23 left. Terry Blunk's 1-yard run with 8:39 left accounted for the final margin. Wake Forest quarterback Gary Schofield, who completed 27 of 44 passes for 325 yards, set an ACC record by passing for more than 300 yards for the third straight game. He also set a school record by raising his career completion total to 431.

(' By TOM KNOTT port Writer COLLEGE PARK, Md. With 43,200 delirious fans at Byrd Stadium choking on the lumps in their throats, Miami placekicker Jeff Davis missed a 40-yard field goal attempt with 12 seconds left as Maryland held, on for an 18-17 victory Saturday afternoon, Jess Atkinson, a pint-sized sophmore from Camp Springs, had put the Terrapins in front with 2:14 left on a 38-yard field goal. Then the craziness started. On orders from Terp Coach Bobby Ross. Atkinson squib-kicked the ensuing kickoff.

The ball hit one of the Miami players. Juan Comandairo, who fell on it at his 49. "I'll take the blame for that." Paladins Top JMU By 17-10 GREENVILLE, C. (AP) Quarterback David Charpia ran for one touchdown and passed for another to lead Furman to a 17-10 football victory Saturday over James Madison in a game between two nationally ranked NCAA Division 1-AA schools. The Paladins, in winning their sixth game in a row, raced to a 10-0 halftime lead.

Charpia ran 3 yards for the first score with 5:52 remaining in the opening quarter. Tim Tanguay kicked a 30-yard field goal with 11:07 left in the half for the Paladins. Charpia, who hit on seven of 15 passes for 143 yards, connected with a 35-yard scoring toss to sophomore wide receiver Chas Fox with 10:59 to go in the third quarter. James Madison attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, beginning with Mickey Stinnett's 33-yard field goal early in the final period. But another drive was stopped with 4:36 remaining in the game at the Paladin 2.

James Madison's final score came with only 1:43 left, when reserve quarterback Tom Bowles hit Brian Coe on a 31-yard TD strike. The game improved Furman's record to 7-2, while James Madi-son fell to 6-3. Castor's touchdowns gave him 13 this year, bettering the ACC single-season mark of 12 set by Wake Forest's Kenny Duckett in 1980. His yardage topped the 271 gained by the Demon Deacons' Wayne Baumgardner against South Carolina, also in 1980. Duke quarterback Ben Bennett, who completed 21 of 37 passes for 407 yards, set a school season yardage record as he raised his total to 2,447, breaking Leo Hart's mark of 2,238. yards.

Hank Rhame's 42-yard field goal in the fourth quarter blunted a Western Carolina rally Saturday and gave The Citadel a 24-20 Southern Conference football victory over Western Carolina. Rhame's kick provided all the second-half scoring for the Bulldogs after a first-half explosion which put them in early command. Quarterback Gerald Toney ran 18 yards for a touchdown at the 10:09 mark of the first quarter, then hit Victor Frazier with a 14-yard scoring pass two minutes later. Rhame added both conversion kicks to extend the Bulldog lead to 14-0.

The Citadel completed its quick start when tailback Mike Lewis threw a 3-yard option pass to John Murphy with 4:04 left in HARVARD 24-17 WORCESTER, Mass. Junior cornerback John Dailey intercepted his second pass of the game to set up a 4-yard touchdown plunge by Mike Ernst with 19 seconds remaining, lifting Harvard to a 24-17 upset victory over Holy Cross. Harvard struck back after Holy Cross, a two-touchdown favorite, pulled into a 17-17 tie with six minutes left when quarterback Peter Muldoon capped an 84-yard drive by sneaking 1 yard for the score. The Crimson's Jim Villa-nueva had a 45-yard field goal attempt partially blocked with 2:21 to play, and Holy Cross took possession at its 28. But on the second play, Dailey intercepted Muldoon's pass at the Crusader 45.

CORNELL 26-20 NEW HAVEN, Conn. Junior tailback Derrick Harmon scored two touchdowns, one on a 66-yard run, and piled up 136 yards to lead Cornell to a 26-20 Ivy League victory over Yale. Yale, 2-3 in the league and 3-5 overall, shared the league crown with Dartmouth last year. Cornell raised its record to 2-6, 1-4 in the league.
