Trusty, Serving Life, Escapes Gang SPARTANBURG.S.C. (AD- RALEIGH (AP) The cam- paign manager for defeated emocratic Senate candidate Nick Gaiifianakis blasted back at pollster Walter DeVries Wednesday, saying DeVries was hampering efforts to rebuild the North Carolina Democratic par- ty.

Businessman Russell Walker said DeVries, "a high-powered, high-priced political expert" was naive and immature when he assessed the blame for the defeat of his client, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Har- grove "Skipper" Bowles recent- ly. DeVries has said that Galifia- nakis ran an old-fashioned cam- paign and allowed himself to be "sucked in" to traps by Repub- lican Jesse Helms. He said the Helms vote-about 54 per cent helped push Jim Holshouser over Bowles with 52 per cent of the vote. Walker said the major mis- take the Democrats made this year was "the failure of the can- didates for all offices to join forces in taking their case to the people." He referred to the fact that Bowles remained generally aloof from Galifianakis. Both of them tried to stay as far away as possible from association with presidential nominee George McGovern.

Walker also accused DeVries of "trying to divert attention from the fact that his rosy pre- dictions of victory for his client were completely inaccurate."
