18 DAILY PRESS, Newport News, Tuesday, September 9, 1975 Game Haimpton-Ferguson Connors Needs To Accept New Breed Of Fans 1 Almost Victim Of Storm jolted 14 others in a Florida game. West, who has been officiating since 1966, says this was the first time he's been involved in such a happening. "I wasn't concerned about the rain, I've been wet before. But lightning is an-, other thing. I didn't want to endanger anyone." PREP PRATTLES.

Cable Television of Hampton taped the Hampton-Ferguson game years ago. In that incident, the game was completed after the players who had been sent to the lockerrooms were recalled back onto the field several minutes later. The Virginia High School League adopted a rule three years ago, either delaying or postponing an athletic event being endangered by lightning. The rule came into effect after lightning killed at least one high school player and Pirates Edge Phils; Win Br 6- 3 Phillies I Neil Graff and rookie Steve Grogan of Kansas State. Graff, a former Wisconsin star, spent most of the 1974 season on the bench, throwing just one pass for a completion.

Elsewhere in pro football, fullback Doug Dressier was traded by the Cincinnati Bengals to New England for undisclosed draft choices. Too bad he can't pass. Dressier, who has 4.1 yards in four years with Cincinnati, was in his sixth NFL season. He missed U.S. OPEN TENNIS CHAMPION MANUEL Underdog Conqueror Of Jimmy Connors Signs ORANTES OBLIGES GIRLS IN GOTHAM Autographs A Day After Pulsating Triumph Patriots 9 Plunkett Faces Surgery; Continued From Pg.

is it on TV? Who would be the challenger Ashe, Orantes, Guillermo Vilas? On the year's form, Ashe probably will be rated the world's No. 1, winner of Wimbledon and the WCT. Vilas has a claim as leader of the Grand Prix, Orantes on his Forest Hills triumph. Connors has none. Connors, with his hair-do i and knee-high white socks, looks like a Little Lord Fauntleroy on the tennis court, but he acts more like Dennis the Menace.

He is 23 years old, going on 12. "If you're going to be a heel, be a real heel," Con-is nors has insisted in better days. jf In a way, Jimmy is a mys- tery. Why does he act that way? Is it because his man- ager, Riordan, has sought to create a villain for commercial purposes? Is it because he was pampered and spoiled as a precocious tennis tyke? Or has he tried to steal some of the theatrics from his court buddy, Hie Nastase? There is a certain amount of charm in Nastase, a puckishness that doesn't offend the sensitivities, although he cannot be excused for stomping off a court or throwing a match because he didn't like a line call. Ali's bombasts are more inclined to provoke laughter than acrimony.

Nastase and Ali possess a subtle humor. Not Connors. He is brash and feisty. He is a fine tennis player, perhaps potentially the best in the world, but he has not learned the one important lesson of his trade. He is in show business.

People pay to watch him perform. He has a certain obligation to propriety. He must relate. This doesn't mean that a tennis player, or any other athlete, must be like a blob of plastic, with no individuality. On the contrary, sport thrives on colorful, uninhibited characters.

But there is no room in sport for coarseness, profanity and insults. Connors, who has made a fortune with his racket, must understand that tennis has undergone a radical change. It has come down to the common people millions of them. Fans accustomed to belting beers and hotdogs at hockey and basketball games are now doing the same in the tennis stadiums. They are a new breed of fans.

They yell for their favorites and barrack at their anti-heroes. That's the privilege they get with their $11 ticket. Connors must learn to accept the jeers with the cheers. He is a great tennis player, with all the tools, and can be better. First, he must grow up.

Eastfaeund Exit 41 Westbound ExH 0 Jim Wilt, Mgr. 827-6170 Specialists In alignment, brakes, shocks, mufflers, tune-ups, LUBE SOW I By RAY HEBERT Daily Press Sports Writer There's a first time for everything and Peninsula District football had its first game-ever delayed because of lightning Saturday night.

Game officials held up the Darling Stadium conflict between Ferguson and Hampton for 30 minutes. "I was about to call the game, when it looked as if the lightning was moving away from the stadium, so the other officials and myself decided to wait a little longer," says Randy West, referee for the Group AAA game. West had confered with his cohorts five minutes prior to kickoff time, and it was decided to wait 15 minutes to see if the lightning would continue or stop. "I talked to both coaches (Hampton's Mike Smith and Harlan Hott of and they were in accord that nothing should be done to endanger anyone's life," adds West." The delay, although the first for Peninsula team's, because of lightning happened once before, but during a game in Suffolk several Jones, who underwent surgery for torn right knee ligaments Sunday, is the third Bills defensive back to be seriously injured during the preseason. Cornerback Robert James is out for the year with a knee injury and safety Tony Greene is out with a broken collarbone.

Greene hopes to rejoin the club for the start of the regular season. Both Greene and James were honored as all-pros last year, making the loss all the more difficult to take. Bobby Grich and Elrod Hendricks walked in the Oriole sixth, and both scored on Doug Decinces' double when Charlie Moore fumbled the carom in the left-field corner for a 4-0 Orioles lead. The Brewers came back with two runs in their half of the inning on a walk, a single by Darrell Porter and a double by Moore, but a single by Paul Blair and Davis' fifth homer made it 6-2 in the seventh. A walk, a single by Davis, an error and a single by Lee May had staked the Orioles to a 1-0 first -inning lead.

Grich led off the fourth with a walk and came around on a single by Hendricks and Mark Belanger's infield out for the second Orioles run. Rudy May tossed a seven-hitter and Graig Nettles blasted a solo home run for the Yankees. LENDER A's Yearwood Facing Tough Rebuilding Job From Wire Dispatches The New England Patriots got the bad news Monday veteran quarterback Jim Plunkett needs surgery to repair a left shoulder separation. The Patriots said Plunkett would fly to California later in the day and undergo surgery at Stanford University Medical Center today. Plunkett's operation will be performed by Dr. Fred Behling, an orthopedic spe cialist who has performed three operations on Plunkett's knees. Coach Chuck Fairbanks said it is not known how long Plunkett will be sidelined.

The period, he said, will be determined by the extent of the surgery. However, most medical experts consider six to eight weeks necessary to recovery from surgery for a separation, which involves inserting a pin. Plunkett, who has survived knee, rib and various other injuries in four previous seasons with the Patriots, was injured when hit by San Diego's 278-pound tackle Coy Bacon in an exhibition game Sunday. A former Stanford Ail-American and Heisman Trophy winner, Plunkett was tackled from behind while rolling out to his right. Bacon landed on top of him.

"I didn't see the man hit me," Plunkett says. "I simply heard a snap when I hit the ground." "Needless to say, this is a very great loss to us," Fairbanks says. "I don't know how big the losses can get, but this is an awfully big one." The former aide to Jim Wilson, who has stepped down to an assistant position with the Builders, inherits a situation that could make for a long season. The Builders have only 10 men back from last year's squad and Yearwood will be working with the smallest Apprentice team in recent history. There is one consolation, though, that should make Yearwood's task a little easier. This year's A's also exhibit more enthusiasm than teams of past.

"We've got a lot of small and inexperienced personnel, but everyone is putting everything he has into it. There's not a player out there who isn't giving it his best," says Yearwood proudly. "We lost a lot of players from last year and probably can patch things together," adds Yearwood. Offense will be the big question and Yearwood is looking for solutions.
