E4 DAILY PRESS, Newport News, Va Sunday. March 25. 1979 Charlie Daniels A Happy Country Boy mmmmpmw uHM as i said. "Jitterbug" features a horn section. "It's just a whole lot more CDB music.

The album kind a. defies description, but we'll be playing the music in Norfolk," Daniels added. Daniels was one of 200 guests of President and Mrs. Carter at a White House reception for the Country Music Association in May 1978. Asked about what it was like to sing at the White House, the artist replied, "I wasn't supposed to perform, but the President asked me.

It was kind of an honor, but I wouldn't want to play there every night. I ain't used to so many tuxes. It was like a room full of penguins." Daniels is a modest, family man whether on or off stage. He's a typical country boy, like he says in the song, who loves the outdoors. As expected, Charlie's favorite outdoor pastimes are fishing, hunting, golf and horseback riding.

Asked what he enjoys most about playing concerts, Daniels had a ready answer: "The performance of the music and the crowd's reaction to it." Looking back over the years, he said, "I have no complaints. I've had my ups and downs, but more ups than downs. I'm a happy man. Life's been good. I can't complain." RqutYd Uidm WHh EKOrt FrMt By DAVID CHERNICKY "17 you don't like the way I'm livin', you just leave this long-haired country boy alone." "If I had to come up with a philosophy, I'd say that was it. What I do is between me and the Lord," said Charlie Daniels, whose honest down-home music has helped the South rise again and in the process, produced one of the most successful Southern rock sounds in a decade. Although Daniels was born in Wilmington, N.C., he makes his home in Mt. Juliet, near Nashville. Daniels talked about his career in a recent interview while vacationing with his family on a island off the Florida coast near Jacksonville.

He's resting up for a rigorous concert schedule which starts March 28 in Morehead, Ky. He'll revisit Wilmington for a March 29 concert. From Wilmington, the Charlie Daniels Band will come to Norfolk's Scope for an 8 p.m. show 'Friday! Daniels, who chews tobacco and dresses like a cowboy with a leather vest, denim and wears wide-brimmed bullrider hats, plays fiddle, guitar, banjo and mandolin for the six-member band. He's an experienced country singer but ask him whether he considers his music country or rock and roll and he'll tell you, "I don't know what to call it.

I just think of it as CDB music." "I wanted to play music as long as I can remember," the 42-year old Daniels said. Like other aspiring young artists, Daniels started out working beer joints and clubs. "Living up in Jacksonville, N.C., they had a big bar population there about 1956. So I did a lot of traveling back and forth." As the times changed, Daniels' music changed. He said he went from purely bluegrass in the 50 to almost all rock and roll for about 10 years, from the mid-50s to 60s.

"It was the kind of music you could make a living with, plus I liked it," said Daniels, whose band records on the Epic label. His career improved after Daniels moved to Music City, or Nashville, although he continued doing fill-ins for other bands, occasionally jamming with other musicians in small concerts. While in Nashville, Daniels played guitar and bass for Bob Dylan in recording the albums "Nashville Skyline," "New Morning" and "Self Portrait." "He's brilliant and I like his music LIBERTINE For one of the songs, The Charlie Daniels Band uses 30 string musicians, ranging from celloists to fiddlers. We like to think that if we make music that makes us feel good, it will make other people feel good," he added. Interwoven with his musicianship is the talent of a fine songwriter. In addition to "Trudy," "Uneasy Rider," "Long-Haired Country Boy," "South's Gonna Do It" and other CDB songs on his albums, Charlie has written songs recorded by Elvis Presley, Gary Stewart, Tammy Wynette, T.G. Shepard and others. From 1971 to now, the band has cemented its recording successes with a grueling concert schedule, playing the favorites from such albums as "Way Down Yonder," "Fire on the Mountain," "Night Rider" and "High Lonesome." In 1974, the Charlie Daniels band staged its first "Volunteer Jam" in the Music City.

For the event, Daniels invited members of The Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers Band and several Nashville friends to "jam" with them. The show provided the genesis of a Volunteer Jam tradition. Volunteer Jam on Jan. 13, "was the best Jam ever," Daniels said. The annual homecoming brought 10,000 CDB fans to Nashville's Municipal Auditorium for six hours of cheering, cheering, foot-stomping and applauding roaring fun.

Daniels opened the show with 13 of his songs, including three from, his soon-to-be-released album, "Million Mile Reflections." "The album's a tribute to Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines," Daniels said. Both were members of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd who were killed in a plane crash in 1977. Epic is expected to release the new album in April. A song on the album, "Reflections," Daniels said is "kind of a personal expression of my feelings. It's an essay of three generations of music, with Elvis Presley representing the 50s, Janis Joplin, the 60s and Ronnie Van Zant the 70s."
