CAPRIO, JAMES G. James G. Caprio, was born on July 22, 1927 in South Orange, NJ. One of seven children, he was educated at Fordham University where he earned a BS in mathematics. In 1945, Jim was drafted into the Howitzer Division of the 44th Field Artillery, U.S.

Army. After the war, Jim enrolled at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY and upon graduation, he became a computer programmer for IBM in Manhattan. Jim married his wife, Shirley Jeanne Butts, in 1955 and settled in Levittown, NY. They raised five children there until a promotion with John Hancock Life Insurance Company took them to Chicago, IL. Jim and Shirley sold their Beverly home and moved to their vacation residence in Bradenton, FL in 1982.

Jim was an avid sports fan and a talented musician. He played the ukulele and the piano and loved to sing and perform at parties with his wife, Shirley, accompanying him. Shirley passed away in 1998. Jim passed away on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 at the age of 81.

He is survived by his five children, James Caprio of Los Angeles, CA, Jean Watt of Wheaton, IL, Christopher Caprio of Chicago, IL, Carol Ungaretti of Oak Park, IL and Germaine Caprio Curry of Oak Park, IL; as well as by 10 grandchildren. After serving as an officer in the Navy, he was an investment counselor in Chicago from 1956 until his death, first as a partner and member of the Executive Committee of Stein, Roe Farnham, then from 1970 as founder and principal of Hotchkiss Associates. He had been the Chairman of the Illinois Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, where he was a Life Trustee and in 1996 received the Oak Leaf Award, the national highest honor. He was a Trustee of the Y.M.C.A. of Metropolitan Chicago, and in Hinsdale had served as Chairman of the Board of the Public Library and Vice-Chairman of the Plan Commission.

He passed away from complications of surgery in the evening of Aug. 26. Fr. Piegl was a graduate of DePaul University, with a B.A. in Philosophy, in 1964.

He completed his theological studies in Rome and Pamplona, Spain, where he earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy. He was ordained to the priesthood on Aug. 19, 1970 in Madrid, for the Prelature of Opus Dei. In his youth he was an avid motorcyclist (mostly Harley-Davidson).

He was also a technology enthusiast, proficient in audio equipment, computers and many other things. Fr. Fred will be remembered as a dedicated priest who spent much of his life as a priest hearing confessions, teaching Catholic doctrine, and personally directing many souls who came to him for guidance. As an educator, he shaped a whole generation of students at Northridge Preparatory school in Niles, where he was chaplain until the In his last assignment he was working as the chaplain of Midtown Center and an assistant pastor at St. Mary of the Angels Church.

His wake will take place at St. Mary of the Angels, 1850 N. Hermitage, Chicago, on Thursday, Aug. 28, 3 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at St.
