Fort Lauderdale News, Monday, Dec. 4, 1978 90- FMW Gains I-AA Playoffs Pell Reportedly In As UF's Coach in Elisor mim-crw lllil MUI MH I Ml "Hi's pa fflT 4 lr-MMUNiiil 1 IWMwnuni ev r-JJ COMPLETE Clemson's Charlie Pell says he'll talk with Florida officials about succeeding Doug Dickey as football coach. CARE Williams suffered an apparent fractured leg late in the game and said yesterday his leg will be in a cast some eight weeks. "I carried some big dude about four or five yards and then he fell on the back of my leg and I heard something crack," he recalled. "It's a great disappointment not only because Ike Williams is a great runner, but because he's also such a great person.

He's given us super leadership this year," Coach Rudy Hubbard said. "Now we have to rally together and reload," he said. Melvin McFayden, a junior who alternated with Williams last season, will start against Jackson. McFayden has averaged about three yards per carry this year, nearly 5 yards below Williams' average. "Melvin hasn't played that much this year because Ike's been doing so well.

We obviously don't have anybody as good as Ike on the bench, but I think Melvin is a good runner," Hubbard said. The 10-1 Rattlers completely dominated Grambling, which finished 9-1-1. "When you play a team that is as superior as they were, there's not much you can do," Coach Eddie Robinson saidA Grambling, on probation, is ineligible for post-season play. "We had as much motivation as they did because we were going after an undefeated season," Robinson said. "I'm very disappointed." Freshman Dorsey Hutchinson, making his first start, intercepted four Grambling passes to bolster the defense.

"He's going to be a very good player. He's been getting better every week, and we felt he was ready," Hubbard said. Michael Solomon ran for touchdowns of one and three yards, while reserve quarterback Robert James tossed a 9-yard scoring pass to Bobby Hawkins. Vincent Coleman had a 26-yard field goal for FAMU. Nt-ws Wire Service GAINESVILLE Clemson Coach Charley Pell says he'll talk to University of Florida officials about becoming Doug Dickey's replacement while one newspaper reports that he will indeed become the Gators' new head football coach.

"Pell will be named the new coach at Florida in a day or so, barring any last-minute and Cresently unforeseen changes," wrote David amm, executive sports editor of the Florida Times-Union at Jacksonville. But Pell told the Greenville, News that his meeting with Florida officials doesn't mean he would take the post if offered. "I'm not interested in leaving Clemson," he said. "That's a point I want to reiterate. But I don't think any person could rule out curiosity.

But the positives at Clemson are strong with me." Meanwhile, the Orlando Sentinel Star reported today that Florida President Robert Q. Marston and search committee member Warren Cason had called both Pell and Southern Methodist's Ron Meyer about replacing Dickey. Meyer confirmed he had been contacted, but told the newspaper, "I don't think it would be appropriate for me to say anything else. At this moment, I'm the head football coach at SMU and I'm excited about the direction our program is headed." The Clemson coach said he has three recruiting appointments an a speaking engagement today and he said he would not postpone them. The speaking engagement is in Jacksonville.

Pell said he is determined to "resolve the thing -in my own mind," perhaps as early as tonight. "I don't say that I will or I won't, but that's what I'd like to do," he said. "I guarantee you one thing: It won't drag out." When asked what would enter into his decision to change jobs if the Florida job were offered. Pell said it would be in the area of philosophy and commitment. "I love Clemson," he said.

"I've got a feeling for Clemson that's more important than just a job for me." "I'm convinced without any question that the potential at Clemson is tremendous," Pell said. "I think we can have a quality program here. I'm excited about the whole future at Clemson." Oil Change Lube inn CO mm 1 Pell 's contract calls for his coaching Clemson through the 4981 season. He was given a new four-year pact after the 1977 season, his first as Clemson head coach. Last year, Pell guided the Tigers to an 8-2-1 record and a berth in the Gator Bowl, where they lost to Pittsburgh.

This year Clemson is ranked seventh nationally and is going to the Gator Bowl again after a 10-1 season. They will play Ohio State Dec. 29 MIAMI The Florida Rattlers will compete in the Division I-AA playoffs without the player who probably contributed the most to getting them there. The Rattlers earned an at-large berth by trouncing previously unbeaten Grambling State 31-7 Saturday night in the annual Orange Blossom Classic. Tailback Ike Williams led the rout by gaining 162 yards and a 17-yard touchdown.

However, the 5-foot -8. 167-pound senior, who earlier became the first Rattler ever to gain 1 yards in a season, will be unable to play when FAMU opposes Jackson State (at Jackson. Miss.) this Saturday. v. vs: INSTALLED iff itp 1 1 SUPER BLEND I Uotoroil Give your car the lubrication protection it needs.

And they did. "And we had to have two quarterbacks play reasonably well. I think that happened, too." The quarterback situation is the only matter that blurs an otherwise pretty picture.

Sure, McMillian and Rodrigue were adequate, but what about next season? "I don't even want to think about that," Saban said. "We'll deal with that in the spring." I The other thing Saban will have to deal with in the spring is the replacement of some valued seniors. Although all the emphasis has been on youth this season, there's no getting around the importance of senior running back Ottis Anderson and defensive tackle Don Smith. "We'll be on the recruiting trail-starting tomorrow (today)," Saban said. "Our work isn't nearly done.

It's important that we have another good recruiting year. If you look at our roster, you'll see that we have a weak junior class." Miami only lists only seven juniors on this season's roster. Only two, linebacker Barry Gonzaiez and defensive back Gene Coleman are starters. The recruiting will, of course, center around a back to take up some slack left by Anderson's departure. In addition to Anderson's graduating, his backfield mate, halfback Kenny Johnson, is also leaving.

This year's freshman class brought in three promising running backs, Chuck Hirschnian, Gary Breckner and" Mark Rush (of Fort Lauderdale), but none of them has proven he can be a mainstay next year. "I don't know what will happen next year," Saban said. "It looked as if the freshmen had a good start, but they're still too young to tell if it will continue." Perhaps the Hurricanes will borrow a slogan from the Miami Dolphins next season. They might think about changing this season's slogan, "It's only the beginning." to be continued."
