Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel. Saturday, Sept. 9, 1978 Posh Plantation Movie Theatre Under Way PLANTATION Construction is now under way for "The Movies at Plantation," a $2 million, seven-theatre complex being introduced to Broward County by United Artists Theatre Circuit, Inc. The free standing, 22,000 square cinema is being developed by M.L Development, a local shopping center and industrial developer with offices at 1620 S. Federal Pompano Beach.

South Florida contractor Bob Salisbury of Salisbury Construction Corp. says that "The Movies" will employ several, unique construction approaches. The theatre will be first in the nation to use a comjoist floor framing system in its projection room. "The Movies at Plantation" will also feature load bearing masonry construction. "There will be none of the usual tied columns or tie beams normally used to reinforce the building," Salisbury stated.

"Instead sup-, port will come from within the structure as this is an integral form of With regard to the exterior design, architect R. William Clayton of Fort Lauderdale chose to incorporate earth toned, split-faced, fluted block. "This type of block is more attractive, more appealing than standard block which has a flat face," Clayton said. When completed at Christmas, "The Movies at Plantation," located at 8400 W. Broward two blocks west of Broward Mall, will seat 1,644 patrons.

The projection room, serving all seven theatres, will be a masterpiece of skillfully designed automation. It will place one operator in complete control. The sophisticated equipment has been custom built by United Artists Theatre Circuit. Completely computerized, houselights will dim, intermission music will fade, and film will begin to roll with the simple touch of the start button. 10D -sh.

"The United States still leads the world in fire deaths per million population," Golding noted. "With 7,200 fire deaths in homes each year, we have about twice the rate of Canada, for example." He also quoted National Bureau of Standards figures that show a family's chances of getting out of a house in three minutes with a single detector in the bedroom is 35 percent. With a detPLtor on every level of a multilevel home, the chances for getting out in three minutes are 89 percent. Speed is essential, as nox-: ious fumes and gases, which are to blame for far more deaths than flames, spread quickly. The Honeywell system, to be available this month from heating, air conditioning, and electrical contractors, will cost around $500 to $600 for a typical home installation.

The Alert system works through the telephone, even if the person it is watching over is unable to dial the phone. Instead he wears or carries a small activator, and depresses a button on it if an emergency occurs. When the button is depressed, a radio frequency signal is sent to the receiver-dialer. It has been pre-programmed to seize the phone line and call the central computer terminal to signal an alert. At the other end is a 24-hour staff, which places the appropriate call as pre-set on the customer's computer record card.

Depending on the customer's situation and needs, the calls can be placed to police, ambulance, doctors, relatives, neighbors, fire department or paramedics. Optional additions cover fire and burglar alarms. The system has a check-back feature to avoid false alarms. Customers also can make test calls to make sure the system is functioning. The Life Alert system, which its maker says is much safer than automatic tape dialers that are one-way only and can break down without notice, is available on rental, lease and purchase plans.

By Anne Douglas The elderly person living alone, the family with an infirm or handicapped member, the deaf, and the blind often are disregarded in security planning for the home. Yet they are particularly vulnerable to.

danger in burglaries and break-ins. One of the problems has been a lack of devices specifically planned for them as well as for the able-bodied. The features that alert such persons are among the talking points of a new whole-house fire alarm system from Honeywell. Another system, this one from Life Alert, can be programmed to protect against fire, burglary, robbery and vandalism, quickly calling for help, as well as raising an alarm in cases of heart attacks, strokes or injuries. Honeywell's fire alarm system is a permanent, wired-in one, which must be installed by a contractor.

For either existing or new homes, it is backed up by batteries that recharge automatically and last 8 to 10 years. In line with the National Fire Prevention Association's recent revision of its home protection standard, which now calls for a fire detector on each level of the home, Honeywell's system provides for Interconnected smoke detectors plus, if desired, heat detectors for attics and garages. It also has provisions for auxiliary equipment for the handicapped, who may need special alerts. "We can wire loud horns for the hard of hearing, bed-shaking devices, and flashing lights," said Richard Golding, manager of life safety markets for Honeywell's Residential Division. He said the loud horn may be advisable even when no hard-of -hearing person is in the home as, for example, an outside alarm to alert people on the patio or in the yard to a fire somewhere inside.

Test switches check the system. The batteries will provide backup power for as long as seven days. The home owner himself can avoid nuisance alarms sometimes set off in the kitchen or near the fireplace by reducing the sensitivity switch on the sensor, which is a dual-chamber In" H.
