6 CHICAGO TRIBUNE LIVE! SECTION 3 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2010 DANCE REVIEW River North: Contortions but few stories 3 ACADEMY AWARD9 NOMINATIONS BEST ACTOR JEFF BRIDGES BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL BEST ORIGINAL SONG "THE WEARY KIND" being the intense visualization of sound. The notion of seeing the music carried through to the Chicago premiere of Battle's "Ella," a solo for the elegantly pliable Lauren Kias, who physically scatted her way through a recording of Ella Fitzgerald's virtuo-sic free-associating vocals. Both engaging and predictable, the solo was obviously inspired by the hyperactive loopiness of cartoons, especially the lightning-speed whoosh of the Road Runner. More about stamina than statement, it served as yet another dazzling pure-movement exercise. Artistic director Frank Chaves' sweeping choreography also was on display His most recent full-company work, "Forbidden Boundaries," paired the dancers with malleable stretch shirts that served as metaphors for fear and self-doubt.

Though the piece was moving and intricate, its relentless tension (most evident in a bondage-type section with the luminous but uncomfortably tethered Lizzie MacKenzie) verged on the unbearable. By Lucia Mauro SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE For its 20th anniversary celebrations, which encompassed a Valentine's weekend engagement at the Harris Theater, River North Chicago Dance Company pulled out all the pyrotechnic stops. The performance left an indelible montage of high-octane body percussion, lush lines and evocative curves. But River North's pure-movement explosion, while impressive, often sacrificed multilayered meaning and story in favor of pushing the dancers' bodies to rapid, contortionist heights. The jazz- and contemporary-rooted dance ensemble offered two world premieres that challenged the dancers' physicality in wildly divergent ways.

Former Hubbard Street dancer Lauri Stallings, now an internationally in-demand choreographer, debuted the curious and elusive "suppose," an abstract movement symphony of detachment, insularity and the need to be part of a community. As an artist with a profound connection to breath and the anatomy's organic web of muscles and arteries, Stallings tends to craft holistic, inherently psychological movement. She works so deep inside the body's tissues that the honesty projected by her dancers can be disarming. In "suppose," however, something gets stifled. Against a pulsating soundscape, the dancers seemed to be working out certain idiosyncrasies that were interesting but ultimately, failed to suggest bleak or provocative underpinnings.

Robert Battle, who heads New York's acclaimed Battleworks Dance Company, promoted his ongoing infatuation with body percussion in "Three," a world premiere male trio that can best be described as body gibberish. With a score that stretched from the Art of Noise to Japanese taiko drummers, the muscular jam session transformed the dexterous Christian Denice, Michael Gross and Ricky Ruiz into bundles of ticks, spins and rhythmic counterpoint their only means of communication Carey now a diva who can laugh at herself Mariah Carey set list Saturday at Chicago Theatre GOODRICH RANDALL 16 Batavia 630-761-0501 "Heartbreaker." But it has always been the ballads that kept her swimming in bring, and so it was Saturday. Whether ramping up some gospel-style fervor on "Fly Like a Bird" or dialing it down to a near whisper on "Angels Cry" Carey has slightly less vocal range but is a much better singer now than when she was enjoying her biggest sellers. Part of it may have to do with her career nosedive circa 2001-2002. Things got so bad her record company paid her to leave.

The bumps and bruises haven't changed her assembly-line pop all that much. But as a personality and a performer, the brief tumble from her pedestal has worked wonders. Before that she was a somewhat bland presence on stage. Now she knows how to have a laugh, sometimes at her own expense. greggregkot.

mm Continued from Page 1 more subtle album that makes her more relatable to those of us who aren't Mariah die-hards or "lambs," as she refers to them. The thaw-out carried over into Saturday's show, and gave new perspective to older songs that once were defined strictly by technique. For many her defining moment was the 1993 hit "Hero," her encore. It's a template for the generation of singers featured on "American Idol," a singing style that dictates emotions instead of evoking them. On Saturday, she trotted out a few of those dog-whistle trills that she popularized in the early '90s, turning Minnie Ripper-ton's soul into a vocal tic.

In the late '90s she flirted with hip-hop, a rhythmic flexibility that carried over into her performances of "Honey" and 1. Butterfly IntroDaydream Interlude 2. Shake It Off 3. Touch My Body 4. Fly Like a Bird 5.
