quered if anyone is to leave the mansion. i How they go about resolving the situation is what keeps us tied to our seats that along with the suspense of what terrible thing is going to happen next. Bxlies fly about the room, people are electrocuted, a man is possessed and almost chops his hand off, and there's a brief trip into the underworld, among other things, requiring special effects which are reasonably convincing. There's nothing new in "The Evil." You've seen it all a hundred times. The plot sacrifices logic and structure for suspense, but then suspense is what horror films are all about.

turns on its master and then disappears. Joanna gets glimpses of an apparition. There are eerie noises and other false alarms as suspense begins to build. Then wham! Everyone is trapped in the house where good and evil are doing battle. Crenna opens a tomb in the cellar and releases "the evil" which has been trapped for years.

It seems Crenna has denounced God and religion and must be dealt with. But just why the former dmg addicts are punished isn't quite clear. Rather than destroy the suspense, suffice it to say that the house entraps everyone and the evil forces controlling the house must be con at uwy I I I 8 I I 8 world-famous restaurant and Museum of Antiques Twilight Dinner Served 4 to 7 PM Braised Lamb Shank nc with Spioed Prunes J.VO I I Richard Crenna: A "THE EVIL" Horror film starring Richard Crenna and Joanna Pet-tit. Directed by Gils Trikonis. Rated R.

By Bob Keaton Entertainment Writer "The Evil" is such a spine-tingling little horror film that one would automatically assume the devil was behind it. Maybe so. But if he was responsible, he didn't do himself any good. "The Evil" is a "good" little movie in which he comes off as the villain. Oh, the movie isn't going to win any Academy Awards and it has plenty of shortcomings.

But for those who enjoy the genre, "The Evil" will be just their cup of horror. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the movie is that it almost surreptitiously slipped into local theaters over the weekend. No warning, no advance publicity, not even an ad big enough to attract attention. In fact, "The Evil" is even playing its first-run at at least one discount theater. You can experience "The Evil" at the Southport for a mere buck.

And that's a bargain by anybody's standards. That is, unless you happen to hate horror films. One of the nice things about "The Evil" is it's low on the bl(xd and guts, but high on edge-of-the-seat suspense, a credit to director Gus Trikonis. give us an apparition, which is stepping into dangerous territory, because ghosts can easily come off as silly, rather than horrifying. But it is to their credit that they make this and the rest of this slock story work.

The plot is a familiar one. A haunted house has been vacant for years. People move into the house and then discover weird things happening. But the cast isn't the familiar one you might expect. There's no Vincent Price or Christopher Lee, for example.

There is a Richard Crenna. And who would expect the falsetto-voiced student of "Our Miss Brooks," the husband of Kate McCoy, or the political columnist-lover of Bernadette Peters in "All's Fair" to turn up in a horror film? Crenna and his wife (Joanna Pet-tit) lease an isolated mansion for the summer where they plan to operate a drug rehabilitation program. They and their crew move into the mansion and before you know it strange things begin happen. Windows and doors slam. Eerie-sounding music is cued up at just the right moment. There's also plenty of shrill-sounding laughter and screaming.

And there are false alarms, such as a practical joker who pretends to hang himself. Trikonis and screenwriter Donald Thompson even take the old horror film formula a step further.
