Featherston; cousin Beatrice Hansen. A silver-star recipient, Colonel Featherston spent 30 years in the U.S. Army and retired with honors at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. The following 12 years, he served as the budget director for Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL, and upon retirement moved back to his home state of Indiana to enjoy time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Howard was also a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he and his wife were very active. In 1970 the Senate rejected President Richard nomination of G. Harold Carswell to the U.S.

Supreme Court. In 1973 Pablo Picasso, perhaps the most important artist of the modern era, died at his home near Mougins, France; he was 91. In 1974 Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hit his 715th career home run in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, breaking Babe record. The homer was off pitcher Al Downing. In 1975 Frank Robinson, Major League first black manager, got off to a winning start as his team, the Cleveland Indians, defeated the New York Yankees, 5-3.

In 1981 Gen. Omar Bradley died in New York; he was 88. In 1985 the Indian government filed a lawsuit against Union Carbide in the wake of the chemical leak at Bhopal that claimed more than 3,000 lives. In 1988 televangelist Jimmy Swaggart was defrocked as a minister of the Assemblies of God after he rejected an order from the national leaders to stop preaching for a year. In 1990 Ryan White, the teenage AIDS patient whose battle for acceptance gained national attention, died in Indianapolis; he was 18.

Also in 1990 the cult-favorite television series premiered on ABC. In 1992 tennis great Arthur Ashe announced at a New York news conference that he had AIDS, saying he was forced to go public because a newspaper had inquired about his health. (Ashe died in February 1993 of AIDS- related pneumonia at age 49.) In 1993 the U.N. General Assembly admitted the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia as its 181st member. In 1994 Kurt Cobain, singer and guitarist for the influential rock band Nirvana, was found dead in Seattle of a self-inflicted gunshot wound; he was 27.

In 1995 former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, in an interview, called Vietnam War policy In 1997 the Vatican named Archbishop Francis George of Portland, to head the Archdiocese of Chicago, succeeding the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. (He became the first Chicago native to head the archdiocese, which encompasses Cook and Lake counties.) In 1998 the major ciga- rette makers withdrew support for a historic tobacco settlement, saying Congress had twisted their offer to help cut teen smoking into aharsh attack on their industry and sharp tax increases for American smokers. In 2000 the Central Intelligence Agency confirmed that personnel action had been taken after the mistaken bombing of the Chinese Embassy during the NATO war against Yugoslavia; one employee reportedly was fired. In 2002 Arthur Andersen said it would lay off more than a quarter of its U.S. workforce.

In 2003 Ed McCaskey, the former singer who married George daughter and went on to become Chicago Bears chairman, died in Des Plaines; he was 83. In 2004 national security adviser Condoleezza Rice told the Sept. 11commission was no silver that could have prevented the 2001terrorist attacks. Also in 2004 Fred Olivi, who co-piloted the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, died in Lemont, he was 82. In 2008 American Airlines grounded all 300 of its MD-80 jetliners amid safety concerns about wiring bundles; the carrier ended up canceling more than 3,000 flights over the next four days.
