Rumeal Robinson scored 22 points to lift the United States into the gold medal game tonight. By George Diaz OF THE SENTINEL STAFF MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina Six years after Rumeal Robinson etched his name into NCAA history with two critical free throws in the closing seconds of an NCAA championship game, he continues to savor the dramatic moment.

Thousands of miles away from Michigan, where he earned his fame as a college player, Robinson sparked the fortunes of the United States basketball team in the XII Pan American Games Friday night. Scoring 14 of 18 points during one stretch in the second half, coupled with a free throw in the closing seconds, Robinson helped lead the USA to an 89-85 victory against Brazil to advance to tonight's gold medal game against Argentina. ST. 0 DARREN McCLELLAN allowed just five hits and struck out a career-high 12 batters over 8 innings as Florida beat visiting Mississippi State in both teams' Southeastern Conference opener Friday. The effort by McClellan (8-1) marked Florida's first shutout against Mississippi State in the 7 Thursday, and I took advantage of it" Neither team could pull away throughout the first and second halves, though the United States would likely have struggled offensively if not for Robinson's shooting touch. During his most impressive stretch, he scored on a layup following a steal, two consecutive 3-pointers, and two drives to the basket. The USA still trailed, 74-71, and would fall behind by seven points with 5:11 to play.

After the United States cut the lead to one, Sean Gay scored on a jumper for an 86-85 edge with 1:35 remaining. The teams exchanged a pair of missed free throws before Robinson made one of two free throws with 15.5 seconds remaining. Following a miss by Brazil's Marco Santos, Chuckie White rebounded, was fouled, and scored the final two points for the United States with 7.9 seconds remaining. Jeff Gordon shattered the track qualifying record with a lap of 170.833 mph to take the pole for the TranSouth 400 at Darlington International Speedway and lead a 1-2-3 sweep for car owner Rick Hendrick. "This is unbelievable," said Gordon, 23, who drives a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. "Rick Hendrick is really having an awesome year." The sweep marked the first time three cars from the same garage have taken the top positions. Terry Labonte, whose qualifying speed was 169.854, was second. Ken Schrader wound up third at 169.766.

The 1.33-mile, egg-shaped track has a new racing surface, which enabled all 20 of the cars that qualified to beat Geoff Bo-dine's track record of 166.998, set in September for the Southern 500. "The new surface certainly has added a lot of speed to the track," Gordon said. "But I didn't think that going out as early as we did fifth, we'd be able to hold them off." Ricky Rudd was the best of the beleaguered Ford drivers, who have complained about the advantages of the new Chevys. He qualified fourth with a speed of 169.567. After Rudd came three more Chevys.

Daytona 500 winner Sterling Martin was fifth off a lap of 169.426. He was followed by Darrell Waltrip and Ward Burton.
