"Don" McAllister, a pioneer in Or-, lando's television and advertising industries, died Tuesday. He was 70. To many longtime Central Florida residents, McAllister is remembered as the amiable co-host of the long-running TV show Hunting and Fish-. ing With Don. The show was live on the old WDBO-Channel 6 (now WCPX) from July 1954 to 1972.

Born in Orlando, McAllister graduated from high school in Lakeland in 1942 and became an announcer at Lakeland's WLAK radio station. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a radio Mark Barker joined him as a partner in 1960 to create McAllister-Barker Associates one of Orlando's first ad agencies. Several jurors said the evidence against Gudinas was overwhelming.

They said his violent criminal past, which included a 1991 attempted rape in Massachusetts, as well as the horrible way in which McGrath died, helped sway them for death. One said some jurors worried that Gudinas eventually could get out of prison if they voted for life imprisonment without chance of parole for 25 years the only other punishment for first-degree murder. "The gentleman has his track record," said one juror, who did not want to be identified. "Personally, I'd like to send the message that you have to stand accountable for your actions." Gudinas will have a chance to talk to the judge on May 19, when lawyers argue further over Gudinas' sentence. McGrath's family also will speak.

Defense attorneys Bob LeBlanc and Mike Irwin will renew arguments that Gudinas' childhood abuse at the hands of his cross-dressing father left psychological scars that never healed and that he Springs, Marie Bamberger, Lancaster, five grandchildren. Prosecutor Jeff Ashton will stick by arguments he made before jurors Wednesday that Gudinas is a pathological woman-hater who deserves to die.

"Thomas Gudinas is a monster; deep into the heart of his soul he is a monster," Ashton told jurors. "Some people are just born bad. They're bad to the bone. Thomas Gudinas is bad to the bone. He has never done a good thing in his life.

He has not done a thing to help himself or anyone else. All he has brought to our society is evil." After the jury's decision, the judge read a letter to Gudinas from an alternate juror who sat through his trial but didn't join in deliberations. The juror wrote that he'd heard of Gudinas's religious conversion in jail. His words brought tears to the young killer. "God often allows circumstances such as these as horrible as it seems to touch a man's life," the juror wrote.

Bill may chop 1-4 interchange Millions of dollars of federal money to build an interchange at Interstate 4 and County Road 46A near Lake Mary may be on the chopping block. The interchange, pushed by local developers, was given $10 million by Congress in 1987, but work was delayed because landowners and state officials had not reached agreement on the value of the land needed to build the project. A bill now pending in the U.S. Senate would cut billions of dollars in federal highway funding, including the C.R.

46A project. However, a spokesperson for U.S. Rep. John Mica, (R-Winter Park), said Wednesday the money may be safe. Sharon Pinkerton said the project's funding was cut because the money hasn't been spent after eight years.

She said Mica told Senate officials, that the project will be under way soon. "I can't say it's guaranteed, but the Senate staffers told us if we can show them that there's been progress, they won't rescind the funding," Pinkerton said. "It's becoming pretty clear that there's not going to be an answer out there that's going to let everybody drive at 55 mph," said Mark Boggs, a state planning consultant. Boggs said one option briefly under study building the planned western beltway as a free highway to draw traffic off 14 wouldn't do much good.

The western beltway has been planned as a toll road that would roughly mirror its eastern half the Central Florida GreeneWay already complete from Sanford to State Road 536 near Walt Disney World. It could be built as a free road for $467 million to $577 million, roughly one-third the cost of the planned 1-4 improvements. However, it would only divert about 10 percent of the traffic from 14, because it would be a less direct and a longer route for most commuters, Boggs said. Some members of the MPO, which oversees transportation issues for Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties, said they think the beltway would divert much more traffic from 14 than the planners estimated. They also questioned the high cost and limited payoff of the state's 14 plans.

However, Jim Kimbler, the state's chief planner for Central Florida, insisted the beltway won't solve crowding on 14. For decades, development in Central Florida has sprawled along the interstate, making it the "main street" of the region, he said. Several MPO members, including Seminole County Commission Chairman Randy Morris, said the state should consider other plans for 1-4, including using the money Lisa H. Choo, M.D. EYE INSTITUTE IfN o.
