The Register: Danville, July 13, 1972 Fischer Was In Hopeless Position '-r World Champion Wins First Game Of Chess Series REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) champion Boris Spassky won the first game Wednesday in his world title chess series against American Bobby Fischer. Fischer, in a hopless position, resigned. He stood up, folded his score sheet and walked out of the Reykjavik sports palace.
