He joined the Army in 1946 following his graduation from Medford High School and served five years. While he was stationed at Ft. Sheridan, he met his late wife, Janet, on a double date.

They married in 1953 and moved back to Mr. hometown. He worked as a meat cutter there for a short time, but when his wife grew homesick they returned to Illinois. Mr. Donehey traveled to Jewel stores throughout Chicago and the northwest suburbs in his job as a meat cutter and retired from the company in 1988.

Mr. Donehey was a quiet, humble man known for his generosity, said his daughter Peggy Swy- ter. have much for himself, but he gave a lot to other people, and what made him she said. Saturday in St. Colette Catholic Church, 3900 Meadow Drive, Rolling Meadows. DOLORES B. HAWTHORNE, 84 Dolores Bandini Hawthorne, 84, a Stanford University educated physicist who studied under the most famous minds in her field during the mid-20th Century, died of heart failure in her Hyde Park home Thursday, Nov. 14.

A native of Pasadena, Mrs. Hawthorne was a descendant of an early Spanish settler in that state, and her grandfather, Augustus Shlaude- man, was a beer brewer. As a young woman, she displayed an aptitude for science and enrolled in Stanford University, where she graduated with a degree in physics in 1939. She earned her degree from Columbia University and at the outbreak of World War II, returned to Stanford where she received a doctorate. During the war years, she was invited by Robert Oppenheimer and others to work in Los Alamos, N.M., where the top secret Manhattan Project was under way, said her daughter, Margaret Hawthorne.

She declined the request, preferring to complete her degree. After the war, she came to the University of Chicago as Edward post-doctorate fellow. Here, Mrs. Hawthorne met the well- known classics professor, John G. Hawthorne, whom she married in 1948.

They had two children, daughter Margaret and son John Elliot. After her children were born, Mrs. Hawthorne left academics to raise them. During her life, she traveled regularly, teaching one year in Nigeria. For many years, she was a member of the University of Chicago Service League, served on the board of the BobsRoberts Service Committee, was active with the Fortnightly Club of Chicago and volunteered in the research labs at the University of Chicago. In addition to her daughter, Mrs.

Hawthorne is survived by her brothers-in-law, Sir William Hawthorne and Edward Hawthorne, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6in Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago, 1050 E. 59th St. AGNES MARY SHIELDS, 98 Agnes Mary Shields, 98, a retired assistant principal of Chicago Vocational High School, died Tuesday, Nov.

12, of a heart attack in her Oak Lawn home. A native of Pewaukee, Miss Shields received her degree from Chicago Teachers College and lived in the Chicago area for the rest of her life. She began her career teaching at Wendell Phillips High School and about a year later, became the assistant principal. Miss Shields transferred to Chicago Vocational, where during her more than 20-year tenure she held several positions, including assistant principal, provost, dean of girls and teacher. Although Miss Shields was only 4 feet 11inches tall, she was known as a disciplinarian, said her niece Anne Friedman.

She stood on chairs to chew out students who towered over her and was pictured in a yearbook photo pulling future Chicago Bears great and CVS grad Dick Butkus down a hallway by his ear, Friedman said. Miss Shields was spunky and well-liked by her students, her niece said. She hesitate to trade her cafeteria pass for a sandwich if it looked tasty enough, Friedman said. An avid college football fan, Miss Shields also attended many Chicago Vocational games. After she retired in 1969, she spent most of her time taking care of her sister.

Miss Shields was the youngest and last surviving sibling of her 12 brothers and sisters. She never married and had no children. A memorial service was held Thursday in Oak Lawn.
