123456 6 CHICAGO DRUMMOND, MARY JANE Mary JaneDrummond, nee Dobyns of Springfield, MA; Harwich, most recently, Richmond and Lake Forest, IL, passed from this life on March 2, 2005. She was born on October 9, 1916 in Jacksonville, IL. In death, she joins her husband, Robert Loring Drummond; parents Leah (nee McIlvaine) and Henry Dobyns. She will always beremembered for her capacity to listen; her recognition of the value of those priceless gifts in life that cannot be purchased; her virtues of kindness and honesty; and her interest in the creative arts, in which she excelled as a teacher and mentor. In the face of difficult times, she would agree with one Huguenot motto, Tiens ta foi (keep your faith).

She will remain in the hearts of her children, John (Rommy Lopat) of LakeForest, IL; Martha of Glastonbury, CT, Jane (Brian) Ford of DeWitt, MI, and Dr. Katherine Drummond (Steven Dunn) of Gates Mills, OH; her grandchildren, Peter, Tyler, and Richard Ford; Danielle and Leah Drummond; and Andrew, Ethan, and Harry Dunn. She also leaves her sister, Suzanna (Ernst) Harboe of Northfield, IL; her brother, Dr. Brown Dobyns of and six nieces and nephews. On September 7, 1946, she married William O. Gross, who survives. Thy had three children, Michael, an actor, perhaps best known for his work on television FamilyTies, Elizabeth formerly of the World Bank, and now at the Chicago Offices of Smith Barney, and Mary, an actress, well-known for her work at Chicago Second City and TV Saturday Night Live. Mrs. Gross worked for many years as a switchboard operator at Saint Luke Hospital on South Michigan Avenue, and thereafter at Presbyterian St.

Luke Hospital (now Rush Medical Center). She was the long-time assistant residence director of the Cook Count School of Nursing. She was a devoted Roman Catholic, and active member of the St. Francis Xavier and St. Genevieve Church Choirs, and a supporter of the Democratic Party.

InMarch, 1972, she helped found the Cragin Communti Association Anti-Crosstown Coalition, to oppose the construction of an expresswa through the Hermosa-Cragin Community. She won that battle, and was president, forman years thereafter, of the Hermosa NeighborsFor Improvement. As president of theHermosa Park Advisory Council, she participated in youth mentoring, garden planning, and park beautification. She was a member of theChi- cago Police Department 25th DistrictSteering Committee, and a member of Friends of the Parks. In May, 2003, Alderman Ray Suarez, the North Pulaski Armitage Chambers of Commerce, and the Chicago Park Distric honored her almost five decades of service to the community with a tree-planting in her honor.

Mrs. Gross was preceded in death by her sisters, Alice and Helen. Melgaard, 80, died peacefullysur- rounded by his family on March 18, 2005. Born and raised in Chicago, IL. He was married for 58 years to his high school sweetheart, Lorayne Johnson. He was a man of integrity, great humor and Christian faith. He never met a stranger and was always quick to share a joke.

His career as a Mechanical Engineer led him to Miami (Pinecrest) in 1967, where their four children were raised and still remain in the area. Warren served in the 11th Armored Division of the 3rd Army under General Pattondur- ing WWII. On May 5, 1945, he was the driver the half track that rammed the gates of Mau- thaussen Concentration Camp in Linz, Austria. This experience haunted him for 50 years, until he was ready to tell his story. The Holocaust Documentation and Education center provided a forum for him to share his story with students and teachers all over Dade county.

His children, Scott (Dora), Dwight (Debi), Barbara (Peter Pruitt), and Todd (Frances), sharedhis love of God, family and the Chicago Cubs. He was theadored Papa of Daniel and Ryan Melgaard, Ashley and Pete Pruitt, and Todd and Grant Melgaard.
