She was all true grit and determination. Despite 25 years of disease, 15 years of constant back pain form a failed quintuple back fusion, arthritis from the time she was 30, and for the past couple of years, ovarian cancer, she fully participated in life and rarely mentioned her disabilities. Born in Bay City, MI, she divided her college years between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan from which she graduated. She was a pioneer woman in many things including achieving a business degree from the University with only one other woman in her class and one of the first 30 women to ever achieve such a degree. Upon graduation she came to Chicago and lived at 1434 Astor St.

where she met her husband who lived on the third floor. She found work as a private secretary, but found it not challenging enough and answered one of the first ever ads by IBM to hire women as computer programmers. Later in life she conducted two in house businesses. She was a great mother, exercising the right amount of discipline and freedom to raise three successful sons who frequently returned home to support her during her long period of illness. She loved duplicate bridge and, like all things she liked to do, played it with a passion.

She was an accomplished gourmet cook who worked for nothing for several years for a chef in a Chicago restaurant in order to learn cooking from the ground up. She enjoyed nothing more than cooking a five- course dinner for her friends. Her first trip to Europe was on Icelandic Airlines with "Europe on five dollars a day" as her guide. She got by for less. Later on, when she could afford it, she and her husband took a trip to Europe entirely based on visiting the best chefs in France.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Richard; three sons, Richard, Jr. (Andrea) of Hinsdale, Peter (Maria) of Boulder, CO and Scott (Ashton) of Portland, OR. She was a role model for her nine grandchildren, Haley, Richard III and Avery Burridge, Abigail, Isabelle and twins Marlee and Lindsey Burridge, Riley and Tyler Burridge; two sisters, Patricia Adadow of St. Augustine, FL and Barbara Withey of Bay City, MI. Long may she live in the hearts of all of us.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, 10:30 a.m. at the Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield, Hinsdale, IL 60521. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to Rush University Medical Center for Research, 1650 W.

George was born in Manistique on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on October 1, 1917 to Joseph and Mary Lesica. He grew up in a large family and spent a good deal of time hunting, fishing and picking berries with his brothers in order to make ends meet. After high school during the Great Depression, George planted trees for the Civilian Conservation Corps and then the Michigan Department of Forestry. After that he worked for the local paper mill and then the power company.

George enlisted in the Army in 1941, going first into officers training and then into the Quartermasters Corps. He served on bases in North Carolina, Georgia, Wyoming and Washington DC and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. He returned home briefly but soon moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and took a job as a wholesale buyer for Schusters, a small, local department store chain. He met Caroline Scheibe, a secretary for Niss Furniture, in 1948, and the two were married on September 6, 1948. The couple moved from Milwaukee proper to the adjacent suburb of Whitefish Bay after the birth of their first son, Peter.

Their younger son, Thomas, was born two years later in 1952. Schusters merged with a larger department store chain in 1962, and George was replaced by the new buyer. However, it long before he was a wholesale buyer for the Ace Hardware national headquarters in Oak Brook, IL. He moved his family first to LaGrange and then to LaGrange Park in 1963 where he has lived for the past 45 years, the last 14 years at Bethlehem Woods Retirement Community. George was active in Boy Scouts for many years, was a volunteer steward at the Wolf Road Prairie and volunteered for several political and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Common Cause, ACLU, NAACP.

George and his wife Caroline worked tirelessly for progressive political causes. They campaigned for Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern, Eugene McCarthy Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton as well as Paul Simon and Dick Durbin.
