He wants to be in game, although he knows that no guarantee will go with any game contract. a three-heart rebid were forcing, South could bid three hearts but practically everyone plays this particular jump as a strong but nonforcing bid. Therefore, if South wants to be sure to reach game, he must bid either four hearts or three no-trump.

We have a strong preference for the three no-trump call. South has eight running tricks at either no-trump or hearts. Thus, he needs only one trick in his partner's hand to give him the no-trump game. He will need two tricks for the heart game. Of course, the diamond suit is wide open and his opponents might start by running off five or six diamond tricks against three no-trump but we would take that chance.

Our partner has responded one no-trump to our heart opening. There is a very good chance that he will have several diamonds, even if le doesn't have a diamond honor. We regret to report that today's South jurhped to four hearts, just as most bridge players would. There i something about 100 honors that fascinates anyone who holds them. West opened the king of diamond and it was up to South to execute a reverse Bath Coup to collect his 10th trick.

He let West hold that trick. West continued with the 10 but beggars can't be choosers. South played dummy's jack and cashed the ace when the jack held. After that, he just ran off his contract. NORTH SUPER PAINT VALUES Give your house an 8-year paint job.
