The new attraction will be a $6.2 million, 22-acre "Adventure Island" water park. It will include a mountain with waterfalls, water slides, large swimming pool, picnic areas, play pool for children and a games area and refreshment center. The water theme park will be operated separately from the Dark Continent and Baker said it is another step toward making the Busch Gardens attraction a "complete family destination." It will be located several blocks away from the existing complex. Busch Gardens began in 1959 as a hospitality center for Anheuser-Busch's brewery, at an expense of $2.5 million, and was home of lush tropical gardens and a collection of African animals and exotic birds from throughout the. world.

The attraction has continued to expand over the years and now is a multimillion-dollar, 300-acre facility that had 2.8 million visitors in 1978. United Press International TAMPA Busch Gardens, Florida's second largest tourist attraction, will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with a S18.S million expansion. Plans for expanding the existing Dark Continent theme park were revealed yesterday, along with plans for a new, water theme attraction separate from the existing facility. "This will be a significant investment by us and for the economy of Tampa," said W. Randolph Baker, vice president of the Busch Gardens Division of Anheuser-Busch Inc.

The expansion of the Dark Continent attraction will be a seven-acre "Timbuktu" addition, which will connect the park's existing Congo and Nairobi sections. The first phase of the Timbuku facility is scheduled to open by early summer, including a amphitheater, a themed-carousel featuring Arabian horses, camels and chariots, and a thrill ride called the "Crazy Camel."
