Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obituaries LUND, MILDRED DOROTHY WILKE Mildred Dorothy Wilke Lund. The strong and loving center of our family, Mildred Dorothy Wilke Lund, began her final journey on Dec. 12, 2007. She was known as Mindu by her grandchildren, her children and those who knew her well and loved her. She was born on July 30, 1915 to Hilda and Oscar Wilke in North Park, IL.

She attended North Park Academy, where she met her one true love, Kenneth. They were married for 57 years when he preceded her in death in 1994. She lived most of her life in the Chicago area, which she loved. The Lunds had homes in Oriole Park Park Ridge Oak Park Wilmette until they moved to Covenant Village of Northbrook in 1994. Mildred found a constant source of strength in her Christian religion and was an active participant in the churches to which she belonged.

She had a strong commitment to family and lived within a few miles of her parents and brothers, Vern and Bob. She was extremely close to her sisters-in-law, Marge, Lois and Ginny. Mindu was an exceptional mother to her children and a loving grandmother to her treasured nine grandchildren and eight precious great-grandchildren. She loved to travel and toured every state, province in Canada and most countries in the world. Mildred was an active volunteer at West Suburban Hospital and Lutheran General Hospital and served on the Auxiliary Board for the Salvation Army.

She created numerous handmade gifts for her family and friends. Mindu has left us with the books she wrote which have a great deal of family history and memories of her life. She will be remembered for her strength, guidance and joy. She is survived by her four children, Roger (Barbara) Lund, Marilyn (David) Crow, Carolyn (Robert) Dennis and Laverne; her treasured grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike), Aimee (Craig), Ryan (Heather), Steve (Kira), Diane (Paige), Brian (Andrea), Alison (Mark), Steven and Erik; her precious great-grandchildren, Ezra, Evan, Lila, Connor, Jackson, Kylie, Julia and Carter; her loving brothers, Vernon and Robert; and her dear sisters-in-law, Marge and Virginia. She is predeceased by her brother-in-law, Paul; her sisters-in-law, Lois and Carola; and her great- granddaughter, Katie.

"Think of the love she left behind, of the cheerful smile and laughter, think of her loving words and deeds that will live forever after. Think of all the wonderful things and even though gone, within our hearts and memories our Mindu will live on." The family wants to thank the many loving and caring Orchard Court staff members of Covenant Village of Northbrook who provided our mother with comfort, care and love. She always said, "Covenant Village is the closest thing to Heaven on Earth."
