(SD 21 at Boston 7:30 p.m. CD 23 at New Jersey 7:30 m. CD 24 Atlanta 7:30 p.m. (SD Home game ALL CAPS Tentative INGLEWOOD, Calif. Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson found a few quiet moments to chat before the game, sitting on some steps near the locker rooms at the Forum.

"It was good talking to him. This is the first time we've spoken since he retired again," Jordan said. "He wished me good luck, but hoped I would have an off night." Jordan most certainly didn't have an off night Friday, scoring 54 points. But the Chicago star could have used some luck on his final shot, a 25-footer that bounced off the rim as overtime ended, giving the Los Angeles Lakers a 120-1 18 victory over the Bulls. The game proved to be too long for Jordan, who said he was getting tired at the end.

After scoring 50 points on 20-of-34 shooting in regulation, he was l-for-5 in overtime. Since he was shooting so well, his Chicago teammates may have lapsed into an old habit depending almost completely on Jordan's scoring. "They kept on going to the well too many times and they passed up their shots," Jordan said. "I think me shooting so well hurt the team in the stretch." Most of the game, he was guarded by Tony Smith, starting in place of Scott, or rookie Anthony Peeler. "That was a nice education for me," Peeler said, grinning.

"I helped hold him to 54." A wide-open Vlade Divac took a pass from James Worthy in the lane, Jordan had no choice but to foul him, and Divac made both free throws for the winning points with 2.2 seconds left in overtime. Sam Perkins scored 26 points, Worthy 23, all in the second half, and Divac 19 for the Lakers. Jordan's 23 games with 50 points or more ranks behind only Wilt Chamberlain, who accomplished the feat 118 times. Jordan's career high is 69 points, in 1986, in a double-overtime playoff game against Boston. Jordan's 54 points also were the most ever scored by a Lakers opponent at the Forum; Kareem Abdul-Jab-bar had held that record, scoring 50 for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1973.

The 6-foot-8 power forward led the league in rebounding and set Detroit's single-season rebounding record in 1991-92. Jerry Walker started Seton Hall's only run with two free throws, and the Volunteers then made 1 of 6 shots and committed three turnovers the rest of the way. Terry Dehere, who led Seton Hall with 26 points, had six free throws and a 3-pointer in the decisive run, and he and Walker combined for all but two of the points. Allan Houston's 25 points led Tennessee (1-1). HENSON JR. KILLED LOU HENSON son of Illinois coach Lou Hen-son, died in a single-vehicle auto accident, Illinois State police said.

Trooper William Campbell said Henson, 35, was driving east on Interstate 74 when he lost control outside Urbana, 111., late Friday night Champaign (ILL) County coroner FJdon Quick said Henson was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m., about an hour after the accident Quick said Henson died of neck and head injuries. Compiled from wire reports Elsewhere around the state: Florida State: Sophomore guard-forward Bob Sura has a new nickname, thanks to ESPN analyst Jim Valvano. And Seminoles coach Pat Kennedy likes it. Because Sura seems to be in the right place at the right time and has a habit of making big plays, Valvano dubbed Sura "Hondo." The nickname is borrowed from former Boston Celtics great John Havlicek. "I guess that's what we're going to have to start calling Bobby now," said Kennedy, whose team is ranked No.

9. So far, he deserves it. Sura, the Atlantic Coast Conference's Rookie of the Year last season, is averaging 29 points and 8 rebounds in two games. He takes his averages and new nickname to Madison Square Garden this week for a Preseason NIT semifinal Wednesday against No. 4 Indiana.

"I don't know that I'm ready to think about that yet," Kennedy said. "They've been our nemesis." Indiana eliminated FSU from the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons. Stetson: With no starter taller than 6 feet 6, Stetson can expect to be outsized in nearly every game this year, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be oitrebounded. The Hatters' inside game was im pressive in a 106-76 victory over the Florida Stars on Thursday night in DeLand. Stetson outrebounded the Stars, 5246.

Center Donell Grier, a 6-6 senior, had 12 rebounds and 20 points, and 6-4 freshman guard Kerry Black-shear came off the bench to add 10 rebounds and 11 points. Junior guard Bryant Conner led Stetson with 29 points. Junior Patrick Sams, a transfer from Kansas State, is still recovering from arthroscopic surgery and hasn't played. He may play a limited role Tuesday when the Hatters conclude their exhibition season with a game against the Slovenia Olympic team at 7:30 p.m. in the Edmunds Center.

Miami: The Hurricanes began their exhibition season on an encouraging note last week, beating the Ukrainian National team, 98-74. Michael Gardner, projected as Miami's starting point guard, ran the offense well. Hammie Ward led the Hurricanes with 20 points. Miami concludes its exhibition schedule against Marathon Oil Tuesday night Alan Schmadtke, Derek Catron and George Diaz ofthe Sentinel staff contributed to thin report. GAINESVILLE An off night by Stacey Poole last season usually meant defeat for Florida.

That should change this season, with the addition of a talent-rich recruiting class and another year of seasoning for the veterans. "We know we have a lot of people who can play," UF coach Lon Kru-ger said. "And that will enable us to keep people fresh while keeping pressure on everyone to play effectively." In an 86-67 exhibition victory over Athletes in Action on Wednesday, 'Poole UF's leading scorer last season with a 17.9-point average i Scored only six points as he began his transition from power forward to swingman. His off night, however, was hardly noticed as junior forward Martti Kuisma in his first start scored 21 points. Senior forward Hosie Grimsley added 14.

"I think we're just a more talent-' ed team this year," said Poole, who had six assists. "Plus, we're really starting to grasp the. up-tempo game."
